Each of these Representative Cities is a center of the industries and life of a section, and the cities have been selected with a view of covering in a general way the chief sections of the United States. Many important cities have been omitted, either because their location and development offer no points that have not already been covered, or because the selected cities allow a more picturesque and vivid treatment. The author believes that the best results will follow from studying the cities in the order given, though the arrangement is such that the book can be used effectively with any prescribed course of study. The exercises are based upon many years' experience in the schoolroom.
