Book British Progress in Pumps and Pumping Engines Classic Reprint

Download or read book British Progress in Pumps and Pumping Engines Classic Reprint written by Philip R. Björling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Progress in Pumps and Pumping Engines Where little power is required, hot air engines are quite in place for powers up to about I horse-power, they are very economical and require but moderate attention. Such motors would often prove the best in country man sions, in farms and under Similar conditions. Compressed air is a valuable source of motor power. It can be carried in pipes for considerable distances with out appreciable loss of pressure, always provided that the air compressor is of the right design and construction; otherwise the loss of power and the cost of compression are apt to be very heavy. Electric motors are coming more and more to the front for pumping purposes, but an essential condition for the use of such power is this, that current is available at a reasonable cost. The advantages under suitable condi tions of electricity are obvious. It is always ready no time is lost in starting there is no condensation of steam. No doubt users of electric power have their own troubles. If the diameter of the cable be too small, or if there are too few strands, there will be a very sensible loss of power, while with too large a cable the first cost will be excessive. But if a cable of suitable diameter be selected, the waste of power will be trifling. Where an electric motor is used three-throw single-acting pumps are the best, as these give a more even distribution of power, which is essential in electric driving. Worthington and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duty and Capacity Tests of Worthington High Duty Pumping Engines on Water Works and Pipe Line Services In that year it was first used in connection with the High duty attachment, illustrated and described in many of the reports contained in this volume. This invention is one of the most novel developments of modern steam engineering. That its success during this brief period has been remarkable, needs no better proof than the subjoined list of places where the High Duty, as well as other types of Worthington Pumping Engines, have been furnished up to January 1, 1892. A number of these tests have already appeared in pamphlet form, or in current engineering magazines in this country and Eng land, but this is the first attempt to assemble them under one cover, and to put them before Engineers in more convenient form for reference. Book Pumps and Pumping Machinery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pumps and Pumping Machinery Classic Reprint written by Frederick Colyer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pumps and Pumping Machinery The author does not think it necessary to enter into a history as to the first use of the ordinary pump, lift and force pumps of the usual type for domestic supply are now so well known that no notice need be taken of them. Descriptions of machinery at work, derived in most cases (except in some specially mentioned) from his own practice and experience are given. He would like it to be understood, where any data are given, especially as to the performance of machinery of any kind, that they may be taken in all cases as good average results, and not mere experiments. Dimensions are given of the leading apparatus connected with pumping machinery and plant, as well as various types of engines and boilers, to indicate to those who have not had much experience in this class of work what they should specify in stating their wants. The author hopes it may prevent in future, to some extent, the issue of the crude specifications and drawings that are too often seen, especially as they place contractors who tender for the work in an unfair position. Where so much is left to their own ideas, it necessarily follows that the tenders are very wide as to price. In the present day, when the lowest tender is usually accepted, it is necessary to have all the details of a proposed work clearly defined, especially as to the leading dimensions and way of finishing the work. Book Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Classic Reprint

Download or read book Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Classic Reprint written by Harry Kelley Rubey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Present Practice in Deep Well Pumping Many pumps are manufactured with the steam engine attached, a combination which minimizes the loss of energy due to the trans mission of the power from some comparatively distant source. It also reduces the space required for the pumps, which is sometimes important. The majority of the larger pumps, however, are run by separate engines as by this means much better efficiencies for the steam can be obtained. Electricity may be used for running deep well pumps and in many cases is economical although the mechanical efficiency may be small. The advantage lies in the fact that little atten tion is required. At De Kalb, Illinois the pumps are driven by electricity, the regular attendants of the electric plant visit ing the pumps twice each day. Duplex Triple Expansion Worthington Pumping Engine: Thesis While a pump is a very simple mechanism and does not seem a very important factor in the world's progress, yet when one stops to enumerate the different occupations that can be car ried on without the aid of a pump in some form or other, he is at once surprised at the smallness of the figure. Were it not for the pump the live - etock on our farms would perish in the summer while the city would never reach any great size until fire would claim it as a victim. It is this wide scope of util ity that has developed the pump into one of the most important of machines, and without it a great handicap would be placed on every industry. Book The Selection and Installation of Machinery for Small Pumping Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Selection and Installation of Machinery for Small Pumping Plants Classic Reprint written by W. B. Gregory and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Selection and Installation of Machinery for Small Pumping Plants The brake horsepower (b. H. P.) is the power delivered by an engine to the belt that drives a pump, or to the pump itself in case the unit is direct connected. For steam engines it is usually about 90 per cent of the indicated horsepower and for gasoline engines about 80 per cent. The same idea is expressed also by saying the mechanical efficiency of the engine is 90 or 80 per cent. The indicated or rated horsepower (i. II. P.) of steam engines is based on the power developed in the cylinder. This can be determined in an actual case only by means Of a steam engine indicator. However, experiments made by engine builders enable them to tabulate with sufficient accuracy the rated horsepower for engines Of given size of cylinder, with a given steam pressure and a given number of revolutions. The practice of all builders is not the same in this particular. Some state that an overload of 25 per cent is allowable, while others give the maximum power the engine is capable of indicating. Download or read book A Description of the Differential Expansive Pumping Engine written by Henry Davey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Description of the Differential Expansive Pumping Engine: With Useful Notes If this engine were to be made double-acting and employed to lift water on the steam stroke it would be expedient, for practical as well as theoretical reasons, to limit the piston speed to 4 feet per second, making it necessary, as the author has already shown, to provide a moving mass of 600 tons, but with the compound engine, working under similar conditions, only a very small moving mass would be necessary, because the variation in the effective pres sures during the stroke would be comparatively very little. An expansion of eight times in a single cylinder would give a variation of 8 to 1, but in a compound differential engine the force is nearly constant. The Cornish engine is a very costly machine; it is only single acting, and it requires a great moving mass to make it practicable to employ a high degree of expansion; nor can it be made double acting without either making it necessary to increase the mass beyond a practical limit or to employ a low ratio of expansion involving a great waste of fuel.
