Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports on the Construction of the Piers of the Aqueduct of the Alexandria Canal: Across the Potomac River at Georgetown, District of Columbia, 1835-1840 The subject which next claimed the attention of the engineers was a plan for the proposed work. Having no instructions on this point, we were left entirely to the guidance of our own judgment, and to the influence of the facts which my survey and examinations of the site of the work had brought to view, and these were such as to induce us to give to the plan a character of the utmost stability as it respected the foun dations, and one of equal durability to the superstructure. It was to consist of twelve arches of stone, supported by eleven piers and two abut ments; the arches to be 100 feet span and 25 feet rise; the soffits to be curves of eleven centers; three abutment-piers, being every third pier, to be each 21 feet thick at the springing of the arch; and eight piers of support, each to be 12 feet thick at the Spring ing, the masonry of the land-abutments to be 21 feet thick. This plan was approved of by the president and directors, with the exception of the superstructure, the cost of which, being beyond the limited means of the company, was left for after consideration. The plan was further altered by rejecting the abutment - piers; but eventually these were restored on the recommendation of the engineers. A causeway of earth, 350 feet in length, was substituted for three of the arches at the southern extremity of the work. Download or read book The Obamas written by Jodi Kantor and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2012-01-10 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning reporter Jodi Kantor takes readers deep inside the White House in an "insightful and evocative" portrait of Barack and Michelle Obama (Chicago Tribune) that will surprise even readers who thought they knew the two icons. When Barack Obama won the 2008 presidential election, he also won a long-running debate with his wife Michelle. Contrary to her fears, politics now seemed like a worthwhile, even noble pursuit. Together they planned a White House life that would be as normal and sane as possible. Then they moved in. In the Obamas, Jodi Kantor takes us deep inside the White House as they try to grapple with their new roles, change the country, raise children, maintain friendships, and figure out what it means to be the first black President and First Lady. The Obamas is filled with riveting detail and insight into their partnership, emotions and personalities, and written with a keen eye for the ironies of public life.

Download or read book Thomas Mann s The Magic Mountain written by Rodney Symington and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Mann’s novel The Magic Mountain presents a panorama of European society in the first two decades of the 20th century and depicts the philosophical and metaphysical dilemmas facing people in the modern age. In the years leading up to the First World War, the fundamental elements of human nature were thrown into sharp relief by the political tensions that resulted in the ultimate metaphor for the innate destructiveness of humankind: the War itself. If such a war is the true expression of human tendencies, what hope is there for the future? Through the figure of the main character of the novel, Thomas Mann explores the alternative philosophies of life available to human beings in the modern age, and invites the reader to undertake a personal odyssey of discovery, with a view to adopting a positive approach in an era that seems to offer no clear-cut answers. This book is a comprehensive commentary on Thomas Mann’s seminal novel, one of the key literary artefacts of the 20th century. The author has taken upon himself the task of explaining all the references and allusions contained in the novel, and of providing readers who know little or no German with enough explanatory comment to enable them to understand the novel and extract the maximum reading pleasure from it.

Download or read book Alexandria on the Potomac written by Harold W. Hurst and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1991 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is both the unique story of Alexandria before the Civil War and a comprehensive portrait of a seaboard antebellum community in transition. It depicts the economic, political, social, cultural and religious life of the city on the Potomac, emphasizing developments from the mid-1840s to the outbreak of war in 1861. The pages therein not only describe local happenings; they endeavor to relate events in the town with developments in other seaboard communities, especially in the South. Special attention is given to the class structure of the community and the prominent role which merchants and civic leaders played, as well as the part of ordinary people in the city's portrait.
