Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-School System of Germany and Its Lessons to America The German common schools have long been celebrated for their efficiency and thoroughness. They have steadily improved from the time of their organization until the present, and although other nations have also improved their school systems, Germany, it is conceded, still continues in the lead. The three most important lessons, Tm taught the world by Germany are: 1, that all mpg? Teachers must be professionally trained and lessons from therefore have a professional standing; 2, that Germ' they must receive permanent appointments; and 3, that children of lawful school age must attend school every day of the year that it is in session, the parents being held accountable for such attendance. Book Report of the Commissioner of Elementary Schools 1921 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report of the Commissioner of Elementary Schools 1921 Classic Reprint written by California State Board Of Education and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner of Elementary Schools, 1921 During the two-year period covered by this report, the ideals and the activities of elementary school instruction have been affected and in some important ways modified by the world war. A large part of the report must therefore be given to considerations of the effects thus produced. From the very outbreak of the war, when first reports came from Belgium, it became evident to American educators that it would be necessary to revise their long cherished estimate of the German system of school and university education. The deeds done by order of German high command, attested in a way too terrible to be mistaken, that a training in material efficiency and a development of a narrow national pride and arrogance, were not sufficient for the making of a nation of true greatness, nor the fitting of a people for genuine service to humanity. It thus became clear to all that in our schools the teaching of American efficiency and of American patriotism must give special emphasis to the rights of weak people and of little nations, to the inculcation of that genuine democracy that tends to the welfare of mankind; and that estimates the grandeur of a people not by its conquests, but by its service to the good of all the world. Book The System in German Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The System in German Schools Classic Reprint written by E. George Payne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-24 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The System in German Schools We often hear or read of the German School System, but we must use this term advisedly and not to understand that the schools of the German Empire are under one head or authority. There are twenty - six States in the German Empire, including the free cities of Hamburg, Bremen, and Luebeck, each of which has its own system and is in no way connected officially with any other State. In fact, edu cation ln the German Empire, as in our own country, is left entirely to the individual States, yet the schools throughout the Empire are very much alike and similar in quality. There are several reasons for this. In the first place the courses in the Hoehere Schulen (secondary and College Education), are governed by the requirements of the Universities which are practically the same for the twenty-three Universities of the German Empire. The Classmal Gymnasium was the principal school until in the year 1900 when the King of Prus sia issued a decree admitting the graduates from the Reform Schools to the Universities on equal terms with those of the old Gymnasium. Since that time the growth of the Re fonm Schools, in which there is less emphasis put upon Latin and Greek or in which these subjects are made elective, has been very rapid. There is no question that the best teach ing, the most enthusiastic teachers, and the best equipment are found in the Reform Schools. There is likewise no question that the growth in these schools will increase in the future. The teachers of the Classical Schools fight the Reform Schools and insist that there is an effort made by the teachers in them to Almericanize the German Schools. In spite of this opposition, as in our own land, the people are turning more and more to these schools and are neglecting the study of the Ancient Classics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on German Schools: With Special Relation to Curriculum, and Methods of Teaching This book is not a treatise on German education as a whole. Not months, but years Of patient inquiry would be necessary to undertake such a task. I rather hoped by confining my work within narrower limits to accomplish something of more permanent value. I had endeavoured, before visiting the country, to prepare myself by a careful perusal of all available reports on German education, and as many of the Official syllabuses of work as I could Obtain. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Sketch of the German-English Independent School of Indianapolis: Our Old School Frederick Stein, the father of the author of these pages, who had been elect ed the City Clerk Of our city only a short while before, aided in this movement and may have had some weight with the councilmen owing to prestige attendant upon being the first of his party, the newly-born Republican party, to attain to that Office. An editorial in the Freie Presse of December 11, 1856, after compliment ing the City Council for its action, closed by saying, May the public schools and public education prosper forever. This language would indicate that the Germans of that day were not nar row or even particularistic; they wanted their children to have the widest possible scope of learning along elementary lines; they wanted German taught their Off spring alongside the English language, and were overjoyed when the City Council favored action looking to an accomplishment of their wishes in this regard.
