Book Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route 1856 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reports of Explorations and Surveys to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route 1856 Classic Reprint written by Joseph Henry Spencer Fullerton Baird and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route, 1856 Explorations of the wild interior, for the purpose of ascertaining the most economical and practicable route for a railroad to the Pacific, are reconnaissances* rather than surveys. They are engineering studies of routes, or belts of country, often of two hundred miles in breadth, of two thousand miles in length, extending from the verge Of the eastern border to the Pacific, Of which the characteristics are to be known regarding railroad construction. Routes are not lines; several lines might occupy relative positions on a single route. The lineal section, rapidly placed by the labors of a single season, and presented as the result of a Pacific railroad exploration, must not always be presumed to be a profile of the preferable or the very best trace for location, existing upon the division examined. From the limited time prescribed for making these examinations, and from the vast extent of country explored, the first line Of barometric levels does not always occupy the best position of the route to which applied. The engineering features of the whole broad division passed over are connected with this base line, and stated in the form of opinions or convictions forced upon the mind of the engineer by former experience Of the necessities of location in all varieties of country. Excerpt: ...the species of Geomys and Thomomys have always been very great, owing to various causes. In the first place, there is the same trouble in procuring specimens of this as of all other subterranean animals, as they rarely see the light, and sometimes are never observed even by persons who have lived for years in districts quite densely inhabited by them. They vary, too, with age and season to a considerable extent, so that in the small number of specimens seen by naturalists, at least of the far western species, each one has almost Berved as the type of a distinct species. There is a very strong resemblance among all the members of the genus, and owing to their peculiar conformation, the points of structure affording good distinctive features are easily distorted or obscured. The best characters are, perhaps, to be derived from the fore feet or hand; the size and shape of the claws, and their proportion to the whole hand; the length of the digits and palm, and the position and extension of the thumb; but many of these points cannot be taken into consideration unless the hand is perfectly straight and bent at a considerable angle to the fore arm, which is seldom if ever the case, unless specially attended to in drying, owing to the contraction and flexure of the joints. The tail is apt to vary greatly in measuring different skins of the same species, owing to the fact that the skin and flesh of the body encircles it to a considerable distance beyond its base, the tail itself appearing to spring from the extremity of a cone. In preparing the specimens, if the entire vertebrae are left in, the skin thus encircling the basal portion of the tail may, in drying, enclose the vertebra firmly and closely, and thus the entire length be indicated. Excerpt: ...our noon camp, the rocks rise almost perpendicularly from the bed of the river to the height of 4,000 feet. Crossed many little streams of pure cold water emptyinginto Clark's fork; temperature, 40. Wednesday, August l7.--We prosecuted our march through the day, and encamped at night in a most miserable spot on the river, without any grass for our animals. Seven of our faithful pack-horses dropped upon the road, unable to go a step farther, and were left a prey to the wolves. We passed an American horse with two bullet-holes in his flank, and one in his head, and much torn and mangled by the wolves; the fate of the owner of the poor steed is still a mystery. _ Called this camp Camp Dismal. Thursday, August 18.--Thermometer, 42.2; barometer, 28.005. Marehed ten miles in an easterly direction, and eneamped in good grass. The route has been through a dense forest, either burning or just burned, the ground being very hot for the animals' feet. Friday, August 19.--Thermometer, 47.5; barometer, 28.2. We marched to Thompson's prairie, a fine patch of high meadow land hemmed in by mountains. It is situated on Clark's fork of the Columbia, and covered with excellent grass. This is a favorite camping ground of the Indians on their hunting expeditions to the plains of the Missouri, and is occasionally visited by the Blackfeet, from the east side of the Rocky mountains, on their marauding expeditions to steal horses from the Flathcads. Pend d'Oreilles, and Spokanes. The Hudson's Bay Company had formerly a trading-post here, but it has since been abandoned. The whole region is abandoned by the Indians and the few whites who have had trading-posts here, from fear of the Blackfeet. These renowned and formidable...

Book Historic Zuni Architecture and Society

Download or read book Historic Zuni Architecture and Society written by Thomas John Ferguson and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1996-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique approach to the Zuni Pueblo's history applying the architectural method of "space syntax" linking the structure of Zuni society to the structure of the architecture housing it. Drawing heavily on archeological findings, the volume nonetheless disputes the traditional archeological theory of population change as a basis for the changes in Zuni society, but does not offer any clear theories of its own. However, Ferguson (adjunct curator of archeology, Arizona State U.) does create a vivid historical, architectural analysis of the Zuni culture, society, and social and architectural structure from 1540 to the 1980s. Includes numerous diagrams, illustrations, and photographs.

Earthquake hazards, and to a lesser extent landslide hazards, are well known, but the public also needs to be aware of other important engineering and environmental impacts and geologic resources. This book will allow Bay Area residents to make more intelligent decisions about the geological issues affecting their lives."—John Wakabayashi, geological consultant
