Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Dangerous Intercourse, Tessa Winkelmann examines interracial social and sexual contact between Americans and Filipinos in the early twentieth century via a wide range of relationships—from the casual and economic to the formal and long term. Winkelmann argues that such intercourse was foundational not only to the colonization of the Philippines but also to the longer, uneven history between the two nations. Although some relationships between Filipinos and Americans served as demonstrations of US "benevolence," too-close sexual relations also threatened social hierarchies and the so-called civilizing mission. For the Filipino, Indigenous, Moro, Chinese, and other local populations, intercourse offered opportunities to negotiate and challenge empire, though these opportunities often came at a high cost for those most vulnerable. Drawing on a multilingual array of primary sources, Dangerous Intercourse highlights that sexual relationships enabled US authorities to police white and nonwhite bodies alike, define racial and national boundaries, and solidify colonial rule throughout the archipelago. The dangerous ideas about sexuality and Filipina women created and shaped by US imperialists of the early twentieth century remain at the core of contemporary American notions of the island nation and indeed, of Asian and Asian American women more generally.

This book was released on 2011-06-14 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Philippine Islands became independent on June 12, 1898, but faced a new colonizer upon the acquisition of the Islands by the United States of America from Spain through the Treaty of Paris. The revolutionaries fought a new, protracted war despite the superiority of the American forces. Against all odds, Filipinos continued the struggle for independence. Many died in battle while the unwavering hold-outs faced the dubious distinction of being convicted for the crime of brigandage. Of those convicted, many were hanged at the gallows, while others endured long prison sentences. They all went down in history as brigands, rebels, and criminals. What happened to these men were written in the decisions of the Supreme Court, with the Philippine Islands still under American rule. These decisions, compiled in the Philippine Reports, contained "e;names and facts"e; which historians and researchers could use to evaluate and complete the story of the Philippine nation during an era systematically forgotten. In the turmoil of nation-building, the Filipinos' convictions became their badge of honor, their exploits perpetually etched in the pages of the Philippine Reports. This is their story.

Book Creoles Their Substrates and Language Typology

Download or read book Creoles Their Substrates and Language Typology written by Claire Lefebvre and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since creole languages draw their properties from both their substrate and superstrate sources, the typological classification of creoles has long been a major issue for creolists, typologists, and linguists in general. Several contradictory proposals have been put forward in the literature. For example, creole languages typologically pair with their superstrate languages (Chaudenson 2003), with their substrate languages (Lefebvre 1998), or even, creole languages are alike (Bickerton 1984) such that they constitute a definable typological class (McWhorter 1998). This book contains 25 chapters bearing on detailed comparisons of some 30 creoles and their substrate languages. As the substrate languages of these creoles are typologically different, the detailed investigation of substrate features in the creoles leads to a particular answer to the question of how creoles should be classified typologically. The bulk of the data show that creoles reproduce the typological features of their substrate languages. This argues that creoles cannot be claimed to constitute a definable typological class."
