Download or read book Essays on Apostolic Themes written by Paul Elbert and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies, prepared in honor of one of the church's distinguished teachers and pastoral servants, Dr. Howard M. Ervin, attempts to address some of the pressing theological issues of our day. Important matters of biblical interpretation in the evangelical and charismatic scenes are treated by three of the contributors, including one by the honoree himself. The role of the Holy Spirit in interpretation is critiqued by professor Horner, while professors F. F. Bruce and J. D. G. Dunn offer some penetrating insights into the work of the Spirit in Paul's churches and into the nature of the New Testament believer as understood by the great apostle. Professor Rea gives us his timely observations on the nature of spiritual experience in the lives of Old Testament believers, drawing out appropriate lessons for today. We trust further that 'Essays on Apostolic Themes' may have something to offer to the discipline of historical theology with five essays, ranging from prophetic-type phenomena in Iranaeus's church and charismatic motifs in Calvin's thoughts to critical assessments of Lewi Pethrus and Donald Gee, who are, within their own cultures, appraised as being dynamic figures of leadership in the pentecostal tradition. Similarly, based on his earlier book of the eighteenth century pioneer of pentecost, Dr. Strachan presents a stimulating piece on the development of Edward Irving's thought. The early reception in America of the charismatic movement is sagaciously surveyed by Dr. Connelly and productive ideas on the mystical presence of Christ in our Lord's supper are advanced by professor Gelpi. 'Essays' concludes with a contribution to the much discussed issues of church growth, wherein practical suggestions are tabled based on the potential implied by Luke's text of the book of Acts. Overall, the editor and respective authors submit this anniversary volume to their colleague and friend, Dr. Howard M. Ervin, and to its readers everywhere in the hope that these fourteen studies may make a useful international contribution to scholarship and that 'Essays' may be found helpful to preachers, teachers, and students of God's word.

Download or read book Weekday Eucharistic Propers written by Church Publishing Incorporated and published by Church Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the section entitled “Concerning the Service of the Church,” the Book of Common Prayer identifies the normative services of the Episcopal Church: The Holy Eucharist, the principal act of Christian worship on the Lord’s Day and other major Feasts, and Daily Morning and Evening Prayer, as set forth in this book, are the regular services appointed for public worship in the Church. (BCP, 13) Eucharistic propers (collects, Scripture readings, and proper prefaces) are provided in the Book of Common Prayer for the days when the Eucharist is the principal service. As celebration of the Eucharist has become more frequent, many congregations and other communities of faith now celebrate weekday Eucharists on days for which the Prayer Book does not assign propers. To facilitate the use of these authorized options, this resource contains weekday propers for the seasons of the Church Year (the temporal cycle), the Common of Saints (the sanctoral cycle), and Various Occasions from the Prayer Book and from resources authorized since the adoption of the Prayer Book. The propers in this resource are grouped into three sections by type for the temporal cycle, the sanctoral cycle, and various occasions.

Download or read book Abortion from the Religious and Moral Perspective written by George F. Johnston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-03-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For approximately three decades, the abortion debate has polarized America. Views range from the extreme conservative position that all abortions are morally objectionable to the extreme liberal position that abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy is acceptable. In the middle are those who advocate laws limiting the number of valid reasons for abortion. This comprehensive volume includes bibliographic citations that address the moral and religious aspects of abortion. It covers such topics as the various arguments both for and against abortion, the status of the fetus, and overviews of several religions' stances on abortion. Citations also include references on how Christianity has influenced abortion politics and law, discussions of Operation Rescue, and official statements on abortion by the Catholic Church and several Protestant denominations. Researchers, as well as anyone interested in the moral and religious elements of abortion, will find this resource invaluable. It covers the literature on abortion and religion found in books, essays, journal articles, academic dissertations and Web sites. And, unlike many of the available bibliographies, this one focuses only on the religious and moral issues, therefore providing greater depth on those two issues within one work.

Download or read book Birth Control Battles written by Melissa J. Wilde and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conservative and progressive religious groups fiercely disagree about issues of sex and gender. But how did we get here? Melissa J. Wilde shows how today’s modern divisions began in the 1930s in the public battles over birth control and not for the reasons we might expect. By examining thirty of America’s most prominent religious groups—from Mormons to Methodists, Southern Baptists to Seventh Day Adventists, and many others—Wilde contends that fights over birth control had little do with sex, women’s rights, or privacy. Using a veritable treasure trove of data, including census and archival materials and more than 10,000 articles, statements, and sermons from religious and secular periodicals, Wilde demonstrates that the push to liberalize positions on contraception was tied to complex views of race, immigration, and manifest destiny among America’s most prominent religious groups. Taking us from the Depression era, when support for the eugenics movement saw birth control as an act of duty for less desirable groups, to the 1960s, by which time most groups had forgotten the reasons behind their stances on contraception (but not the concerns driving them), Birth Control Battles explains how reproductive politics divided American religion. In doing so, this book shows the enduring importance of race and class for American religion as it rewrites our understanding of what it has meant to be progressive or conservative in America.
