Book Teaching Mathematics Through Problem Solving

Download or read book Teaching Mathematics Through Problem Solving written by Akihiko Takahashi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-31 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engaging book offers an in-depth introduction to teaching mathematics through problem-solving, providing lessons and techniques that can be used in classrooms for both primary and lower secondary grades. Based on the innovative and successful Japanese approaches of Teaching Through Problem-solving (TTP) and Collaborative Lesson Research (CLR), renowned mathematics education scholar Akihiko Takahashi demonstrates how these teaching methods can be successfully adapted in schools outside of Japan. TTP encourages students to try and solve a problem independently, rather than relying on the format of lectures and walkthroughs provided in classrooms across the world. Teaching Mathematics Through Problem-Solving gives educators the tools to restructure their lesson and curriculum design to make creative and adaptive problem-solving the main way students learn new procedures. Takahashi showcases TTP lessons for elementary and secondary classrooms, showing how teachers can create their own TTP lessons and units using techniques adapted from Japanese educators through CLR. Examples are discussed in relation to the Common Core State Standards, though the methods and lessons offered can be used in any country. Teaching Mathematics Through Problem-Solving offers an innovative new approach to teaching mathematics written by a leading expert in Japanese mathematics education, suitable for pre-service and in-service primary and secondary math educators.

This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Summary Report on the Teaching of Mathematics in Japan, 1912 Following the resolution passed at the fourth International Congress of Mathematicians held at Rome in April 1908, an International Commission was formed to make a comparative study of methods and ways in the teaching of mathematics in the secondary schools of different countries and present a collective report to the next Congress to be held at Cambridge in August 1912. The words secondary school have varied meanings in different countries. This, in conjunction with other considera tions regarding the working detail of the enquiry, soon lead to the conviction, that such limitation is not only undesirable but even impracticable. So it was altogether dropped. It was decided that the work of the Commission should include the whole field of mathematical instruction, from the most rudimentary education to that stage of the university education, where original research begins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Teaching of Mathematics in Japan, 1912 Thematics IN japan prepared by myself and published conjointly with this book, will account for very many shortcomings both in form and content to be found in these Divisional Reports now bound in one volume. It is much to be regretted that our best intentions were forbidden the support of our best energies. Moreover, in the work of translating the Japanese original into English, far greater difficulties were experienced than were anticipated, and indeed to such a degree as would be almost incredible to those who had no hand in it. Book excerpt: Lesson study is a popular professional development approach in Japan whereby teachers collaborate to study content, instruction, and how students solve problems and reach for understanding in order to improve elementary mathematics instruction and learning in the classroom. This book is the first comprehensive look at the system and process of lesson study in Japan. It describes in detail the process of how teachers conducted lesson study--how they collaborated in order to develop a lesson, what they talked about during the process, and what they looked at in order to understand deeply how students were learning. Readers see the planning of a mathematics lesson, as well as how much content knowledge the teachers have. They observe students' problem solving strategies and learn how Japanese teachers prepare themselves to identify those strategies and facilitate the students' discussion. Written for mathematics teachers, educational researchers, school administrators interested in teachers' professional development, and professional developers, this landmark volume provides an in-depth understanding of lesson study that can lead to positive changes in teachers' professional development and in teaching and learning in the United States.
