In the book, therefore, concentration had been laid on the issues like profitability in fish production, marketing system of fish and fishery products, study of demand and utilization pattern, most effective use of the fishery technology and implementation of fishery policies. It also covered the crucial issues like management of finance, insurance, social problems of fishermen and impact of organizational set up in fishery. Book Assessment management and future directions for coastal fisheries in Asian countries

Download or read book Assessment management and future directions for coastal fisheries in Asian countries written by Silvestre, G. et al and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Asia, the fisheries sector is important in terms of food security, livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings. However, as in many parts of the world, there are signs that capture fisheries are fully exploited or overfished. Management of fisheries in the region is often hampered by lack of information on the status of fisheries in terms of biological, social, economic, policy and governance aspects. This regional project documents an alarming decline on coastal fishery resources, based on historic research surveys in South and Southeast Asia. Socio-economic analyses and policy reviews highlight the importance of the fisheries sector but also the challenges facing it. Potential interventions to improve fisheries management in the countries are outlined and defined with environmental, socioeconomic and institutional objectives.

Book Some Considerations for the Management of Coastal Lagoon and Estuarine Fisheries

Download or read book Some Considerations for the Management of Coastal Lagoon and Estuarine Fisheries written by James M. Kapetsky and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1981 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Management of artisanal fisheries in coastal lagoons and estuaries is treated in three broad categories -- regulatory management, non-regulatory management, and interactions between fisheries or fishery interests. Regulation of artisanal fisheries in coastal lagoons and estuaries by government authority is hampered for several reasons. Technical and financial constraints on government severely limit enforcement capabilities. Socio-economic considerations, chiefly the lack of alternative employment opportunities for fishermen, preclude the adoption of many of the classical regulatory management techniques. As a means to complement or supplement management by central government authority, revitalization of local traditional authority is advocated. Non-regulatory management, the application of methods which increase capture and culture fishery potential through manipulation of the environment, is illustrated by various kinds of hydraulic engineering, predator control, stocking, artificial nursery areas, and brush-park fisheries. Interactions between fisheries or fishery interests is treated at several levels. Considered are competition between groups of fishermen of different ethnic and economic backgrounds, interactions between artisanal capture fisheries and aquaculture, and competition between artisanal fisheries of coastal lagoons and estuaries and off-shore shore industrial fisheries which fish the same stocks.

Book Adjustments to Changes in Fisheries Law and Economics

Download or read book Adjustments to Changes in Fisheries Law and Economics written by Barbara C. Cleveland and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1985 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970's there have been significant changes in the conditions governing the exploitation of marine fishery resources. These changes include the generalized extension of national jurisdiction over fisheries to 200 nautical miles; the decline in the rate of growth of world catch and the growing evidence of limits to supply; and the changes in economic conditions including the rise in fuel prices and the economic recessions. These changes have had significantly different effects on different countries. This document contains case studies of the effects on eight countries: Argentina, Australia, Cuba, Kiribati, Malaysia, Morocco, Norway and Poland.

Book The Gulf of Guinea Large Marine Ecosystem

Download or read book The Gulf of Guinea Large Marine Ecosystem written by J.M. McGlade and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-08-15 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gulf of Guinea volume is part of a series on the Large Marine Ecosystems. This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. A significant number of new data sets, including some which have been repatriated from outside the region, are now made available through this publication. The combination of the various chapters underlines the interlinkages that exist between the interannual and seasonal dynamical behaviour of the oceanic offshore waters and the living marine resources along the coast, and the direct effect they have on the livelihoods of the populations living throughout the Gulf of Guinea. The volume is intended for those who have a general interest in the region as well as those who work professionally in the field. It will also be of immense value to resource managers and policy-makers as a demonstration project on how research can help solve the pressing problems of economic and food security in coastal regions.
