This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Pepys Manuscripts: Preserved at Magdalene College, Cambridge Grindal writes to the Earl to complain of the Arianism of one Smythe. Alley, Bishop of Exeter, applies through Lord Robert for leave to eke out a net revenue of 300l. by letting out-houses and "waste" in the precincts, while Bishop Scory of Hereford, who had moved his clergy to make contributions in aid of a new Residentiary, contrary to a law for Wales and the Marches made by Henry VIII, says that the Papists intend in consequence to undo him at the next Assizes. During the War of Religion in France, Leicester's foreign correspondents are constantly appealing to his zeal for the Religion. It seems to have been part of the duty of the Master of the Horse to provide houses for Ambassadors and Foreigners of Distinction in London. Lord Francis Bedford, at Berwick, prays that if the Lady Cecilia, Marchioness of Baden lies not in his London house herself, "order may be given for the removing of her train which, as I hear, be but a homely company and in as homely manner do use my house, breaking and spoiling windows and everything." Again, if a house must be provided for the Spanish Ambassador, Bishop Home, of Winchester, is content that no rent be paid for his town house, though he had meant to occupy it himself. If, on the other hand, the Ambassador has to find a house at his own charges, he shall pay 300 crowns till St. George's Day next. Several of the foreign correspondents of Dudley refer to horses, bought, or intended as presents for him, and Kings and Queens were constantly presenting these to one another (see index, horses). Riders also were sought out and sent to England. Five letters in the collection [p. 3, below] on the subject of the death of Amy Robsart were printed by the third Lord Braybrooke, Hereditary Visitor of Magdalene, in the Appendix to the first edition of Pepys' Diary, but both his Lordship and Mr. Froude overlooked a most important letter of 1567 from Thomas Blount to Leicester, describing an attempt to suborn John Appleyard, half brother to Amy, to give evidence against the Earl as to her death. A merchant, instigated by the Duke of Norfolk, the Earl of Sussex and Thomas Heneage, had an interview with Appleyard at Hampton, offering him, in vain, 1,000l. down, and from time to time as much as he should require. A further charge against Dudley was that he was the only hinderer of the Queen's marriage. On this matter Thomas Randolph writes to him in 1563-4, "The worst I intend you is to marry a Queen." Book Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge Census of printed books

Download or read book Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge Census of printed books written by Pepys Library and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Continuing work on Pepys's library, and recent discoveries, necessitate expansion of the content and entries in the original volumes. This is the first in the Supplementary Series. Pepys's library has been, as he directed, preserved intact at his old Cambridge college since 1724. Between 1978 and 1994 a complete catalogue was published for the first time. The present title, essential to all users of the first volume in that series, N.A. Smith's Printed Books, vastly enhances the range of information available. The short-title arrangement of Printed Books is replaced by a numerical listing which follows the library's shelf-order; many entries have been extended, and where possible updated with reference to new scholarship; the location of MSS and other material treated elsewhere in the catalogue is also indicated, providing for the first time a published conspectus of the whole library. Extensive indexes have been provided for authors and ancillary contributors, subjects, printers and places of publication, and references which reflect Pepys himself and his bibliophilism.Concordances identify the Pepys books covered by STC, Wing, ESTC and other bibliographies. Dr CHARLES KNIGHTON gained his Ph D from Magdalene College, Cambridge.

Book A History of the University of Cambridge Volume 2 1546 1750

Download or read book A History of the University of Cambridge Volume 2 1546 1750 written by Victor Morgan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings to completion the four-volume A History of the University of Cambridge, and is a vital contribution to the history not only of one major university, but of the academic societies of early modern Europe in general. Its main author, Victor Morgan, has made a special study of the relations between Cambridge and its wider world: the court and church hierarchy which sought to control it in the aftermath of the Reformation; the 'country', that is the provincial gentry; and the wider academic world. Morgan also finds the seeds of contemporary problems of university governance in the struggles which led to and followed the new Elizabethan Statutes of 1570. Christopher Brooke, General Editor and part-author, has contributed chapters on architectural history and among other themes a study of the intellectual giants of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.

Book Pepys and the Navy

Download or read book Pepys and the Navy written by C S Knighton and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2003-04-24 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pepys's diary has made him a literary celebrity. In his own time he was known as the chief naval official under Charles II and James II and this aspect of the diarist's life has not received the attention it deserves from his modern biographers. Charles Knighton, a Pepys scholar with a particular interest in naval history, reveals the full extent of Pepys's achievements in creating a modern navy which was both permanent and professional.

Book The Letters of Samuel Pepys 1656 1703

Download or read book The Letters of Samuel Pepys 1656 1703 written by Samuel Pepys and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The correspondence included here represents the first selection of Pepys's letters drawn from all possible sources to be published since 1933. Since the Diary does not cover this period, the letters enable the reader to follow Pepys' early career on the staff of the Earl of Sandwich, his rise to greatness as Secretary of the Admiralty, and his retirement after the Glorious Revolution. Along the way Pepys fought battles with opponents of his naval reforms and enemies who tried to implicate him in the Popish Plot, while taking care of his various relatives and keeping up with an array of friends and acquaintances who included many of the great and famous of late-seventeenth-century England. The letters have been chosen to reflect all these aspects of Pepys's varied and fascinating life, and include 30 never before published. They are accompanied by a running commentary, biographies of persons mentioned, a glossary, a chronology, and an introduction that explains how the letters have survived and analyses how they were written.BR>Guy de la Bédoyère is a historian and archaeologist with numerous books to his credit. His specialist field is Roman Britain but he has published three books for Boydell on the 'other' seventeenth-century diarist, John Evelyn (1620-1706), including the widely-acclaimed Particular Friends: The Correspondence of Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn which features all the letters exchanged by the two men over a period of 38 years.
