Book Report on the Murder of the General Secretary

Download or read book Report on the Murder of the General Secretary written by Karel Kaplan and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trial of Czech Communist Party General Secretary Rudolf Slansky and ten other officials in 1952 was distinctive due to its clear antisemitic character: one of the accusations against the defendants was participation in an anti-Soviet Zionist conspiracy. This accusation took shape in the USSR, which was in fact behind this show trial, at a time when its relations with Israel had deteriorated and antisemitism became a component in Soviet internal and foreign politics. From the end of the war, Czechoslovakia had adopted a favorable stance toward the Jewish Yishuv and the State of Israel, providing military support as well; because of this, Czechoslovakia had to be punished by the Soviet Union, to become a scapegoat for the failure of Soviet attempts to penetrate the Middle East through the State of Israel.

Book excerpt: A widely celebrated intellectual historian of twentieth-century Europe, Anson Rabinbach is one of the most important scholars of National Socialism working over the last forty years. This volume collects, for the first time, his pathbreaking work on Nazi culture, antifascism, and the after-effects of Nazism on postwar German and European culture. Historically detailed and theoretically sophisticated, his essays span the aesthetics of production, messianic and popular claims, the ethos that Nazism demanded of its adherents, the brilliant and sometimes successful efforts of antifascist intellectuals to counter Hitler’s rise, the most significant concepts to emerge out of the 1930s and 1940s for understanding European authoritarianism, the major controversies around Nazism that took place after the regime’s demise, the philosophical claims of postwar philosophers, sociologists and psychoanalysts—from Theodor Adorno to Hannah Arendt and from Alexander Kluge to Klaus Theweleit—and the role of Auschwitz in European history.

The sweep of its power gives an invigorating sense of the beauty and universality of Islam. Robin Woodsworth Carlsen For centuries Europe has benefitted from Islam, often without acknowledging it and without giving anything in return. Now with the publication of Islam Between East and West, Europe has begun to pay its debt to Islam. Rational and yet not insulting to the emotions, it exalts the spirit without denigrating the body. But what stands it apart as a landmark is its transcendental wisdom expressed in a style inherent to all noble ideas. Doubtless, its appeal will go beyond its time because it embraces life - and there is no theme greater than life. M . Tariq
