Book excerpt: In the fields of politics, culture and literature the Sidney family was undoubtedly one of the major players in early modern England. This study provides the first book-length examination of their importance to political and court life, both in supporting the monarchy and parliament and in exploring alternative modes of government. Drawing upon both historical and literary sources it offers an absorbing insight into the self-perceptions of a leading renaissance family and how they adapted to the vicissitudes of the sixteenth and seventeenth century world.

Book Dramatists and their Manuscripts in the Age of Shakespeare Jonson Middleton and Heywood

Download or read book Dramatists and their Manuscripts in the Age of Shakespeare Jonson Middleton and Heywood written by Grace Ioppolo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents new evidence about the ways in which English Renaissance dramatists such as William Shakespeare, Ben Jonson, Thomas Heywood, John Fletcher and Thomas Middleton composed their plays and the degree to which they participated in the dissemination of their texts to theatrical audiences. Grace Ioppolo argues that the path of the transmission of the text was not linear, from author to censor to playhouse to audience - as has been universally argued by scholars - but circular. Extant dramatic manuscripts, theatre records and accounts, as well as authorial contracts, memoirs, receipts and other archival evidence, are used to prove that the text returned to the author at various stages, including during rehearsal and after performance. This monograph provides much new information and case studies, and is a fascinating contribution to the fields of Shakespeare studies, English Renaissance drama studies, manuscript studies, textual study and bibliography and theatre history.

Book Shakespeare Violence and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Shakespeare Violence and Early Modern Europe written by Andrew Hiscock and published by . This book was released on 2022-02-02 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare, Violence and Early Modern Europe broadens our understanding of the final years of the last Tudor monarch, revealing the truly international context in which they must be understood. Uncovering the extent to which Shakespeare's dramatic art intersected with European politics, Andrew Hiscock brings together close readings of the history plays, compelling insights into late Elizabethan political culture and renewed attention to neglected continental accounts of Elizabeth I. With fresh perspective, the book charts the profound influence that Shakespeare and ambitious courtiers had upon succeeding generations of European writers, dramatists and audiences following the turn of the sixteenth century. Informed by early modern and contemporary cultural debate, this book demonstrates how the study of early modern violence can illuminate ongoing crises of interpretation concerning brutality, victimization and complicity today.

Book Post and Courier Service in the Diplomacy of Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Post and Courier Service in the Diplomacy of Early Modern Europe written by E.J.B. Allen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diplomatic negotiation of our day is a curious mix of national endeavor within the bloc concept. The remnants of our nineteenth century nation alism struggles - half willingly - with the power that a larger continental or ideological bloc might bring. In the sixteenth century men knew that the protective bloc of Christendom would not provide peace, yet they were not sure that the new national states would secure it either. We have much to gain from a study of diplomatic procedures and institutions in such a transitional period. This monograph is based upon the great collections of published diplomatic correspondence of England, France, and Spain and, thanks to the generosity of Dr. De Lamar Jensen, I have been fortunate in having at my disposal his hoard of microfilmed letters and dispatches of the leading ambassadors of the sixteenth century. Of course, I have not read all the diplomatic correspondence, but I believe I have culled sufficient information to show and analyze the role played by the post and courier service in the diplomacy of Early Modem Europe.

Book Scotland and the Thirty Years War 1618 1648

Download or read book Scotland and the Thirty Years War 1618 1648 written by Steve Murdoch and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-07-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the entanglement of Scotland in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), discussing both the diplomatic and military aspects of the conflict that led to Scottish involvement in the heart of the Holy Roman Empire. To the Scots, the war was linked to the fate of the Scottish princess, Elizabeth of Bohemia, rather than the politics of central Europe per se. In three sections, the 12 authors have illuminated the political processes that led to the participation of as many as 50,000 Scottish troops in the war. The official alliances of the Stuart regime, the independent diplomacy of the Scottish Parliament and the actions of numerous well placed individuals at various European courts are all shown to have had a bearing on this important episode of European history.

Book Sir John Harington and the Book as Gift

Download or read book Sir John Harington and the Book as Gift written by Jason Scott-Warren and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2001 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir John Harington (1560-1612) has long been recognized as one of the most colorful and engaging figures at the English Renaissance court. Godson of Queen Elizabeth, translator of Ariosto, and inventor of the water-closet, he was also a lively writer in a wide variety of modes, and an acute commentator on his times. Combining detailed readings and first-hand historical research, this study reconstructs the complex, often devious agenda that Harington wrote into his books as he customized them for specific individuals and occasions.
