Book Role of Natural Enemies in Population Suppression and Pest Management of Green Rice Leafhoppers

Download or read book Role of Natural Enemies in Population Suppression and Pest Management of Green Rice Leafhoppers written by F. O. Carino and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine if Nephotettix virescens can cause direct demage and yield loss to rice in the field. 2) to develop a sampling method for GLH, and to determine the appropriats sample size. 3) to determine the roles played by natural predators and parasites in suppressing GLH populations, and to observe the effects of selected inseticides and host plant resistance on these roles. 4) to develop a technique for conserving predadtors in the field. 5) to propose a framework for a GLH pest management system that includes natural enemies.

Book Nematodes and the Biological Control of Insect Pests

Download or read book Nematodes and the Biological Control of Insect Pests written by RA Bedding and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental and public health problems arising from the use of chemical insecticides have led to an increasing demand for alternatives for insect pest control. Together with this, widespread public concern resulting in governmental bans on many of the most effective insecticides and development of insecticide resistance has severely reduced the range of useful insecticides available. Alternative control measures such as the biological control of pest insects with parasitoids and predators and microbial biocides have been in field use for several decades. Although these alternatives are being continually improved, most insect pests are nonetheless still controlled with chemical insecticides. This book presents the latest work on the biological control of insects using nematodes; it covers a range of topics that will help provide a better understanding of the potential problems involved in developing these nematodes as biological control agents. Nematodes infect hundreds of different species from most orders of insects and affect their insect hosts in a variety of ways.

Book Handbook for the Identification of Leafhoppers and Planthoppers of Rice

Download or read book Handbook for the Identification of Leafhoppers and Planthoppers of Rice written by Michael R. Wilson and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1991 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rice is the most important cereal grown in tropical countries and sapsucking leafhoppers and planthoppers (Homoptera: Auchenorryncha) reduce yields either by direct feeding or by transmitting virus and virus-like pathogens. Effective rice pest management requires the accurate identification of any pest species and this handbook provides keys to identify over 70 leafhopper and planthopper species recorded in the major rice growing regions. All the major pest species are included, as well as others that are frequently found but not yet considered important. A comprehensive account of all these species with descriptions, diagnoses, distributions and notes on biology is given, as well a key to nymphal stages of common Asian species and details of the separation of different instars. An introduction to the morphology and taxonomic grouping of the Auchenorryncha and four pages of colour plates are also included, and the volume is completed by a comprehensive and wide-ranging bibliography.
