Download or read book Rural India written by Peter Robb and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new printing of a volume which has influenced many scholars, and has often been adopted as a text for teaching, this book of essays delves deeply into specific cases, and questions the meanings of familiar terms and categories. The view of India which they contain is in many senses radical, but also reinforced by recent research. The central issue is how rural India related to the wider world under foreign rule. This raises matters of lively and continuing debate--such as colonial impact and possible continuities from pre-colonial times, the meanings of property, markets and "modernization," the extent of rural autonomy, and the degree of conceptual and practical equivalence between the local and the universal. Land and power are the major subjects of the book, but it also pursues issues of disease (the plague), politics and religion (Muslims in the Punjab), and literature (Tarashankar Banerjee).

Download or read book Late Victorian Holocausts written by Mike Davis and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2017-01-01 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining a series of El Niño-induced droughts and the famines that they spawned around the globe in the last third of the 19th century, Mike Davis discloses the intimate, baleful relationship between imperial arrogance and natural incident that combined to produce some of the worst tragedies in human history. Late Victorian Holocausts focuses on three zones of drought and subsequent famine: India, Northern China; and Northeastern Brazil. All were affected by the same global climatic factors that caused massive crop failures, and all experienced brutal famines that decimated local populations. But the effects of drought were magnified in each case because of singularly destructive policies promulgated by different ruling elites. Davis argues that the seeds of underdevelopment in what later became known as the Third World were sown in this era of High Imperialism, as the price for capitalist modernization was paid in the currency of millions of peasants' lives.

Download or read book Locality Province and Nation written by John Gallagher and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1973-07-26 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the steady growth of interest in the history of India under the British, interpretations have emerged, and they may sharply alter much of our thinking about Indian nationalism and British Imperialism. Some of these historical revisions, and the conclusions which may flow from them, are illustrated by the essays in this book. All of them grapple with questions of Indian political organization in different parts of the British Raj. They enquire how these organizations worked at different level; in the towns and in the countryside, in the provinces and in the subcontinent itself. They examine how these kinds of politics came to be bonded together into what were called 'nationalist' movements. They suggest that the interplay between these movements and British Imperialism was very much more ambiguous than has been commonly supposed. All these essays are preliminary announcements of findings which will later appear in longer versions.

Download or read book Witchcraft Accusations from Central India written by Helen Macdonald and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unravels the institutions surrounding witchcraft in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh through theoretical and empirical research on witchcraft, violence and modernity in contemporary times. The author pieces together ‘fragments’ of stories gathered utilising ethnographic methods to examine the meanings associated with witches and witchcraft, and how they connect with social relations, gender, notions of agency, law, media and the state. The volume uses the metaphor of the shattered urn to tell the story of the accusations, punishment, rescue and the aftermath of the events of the trial of women accused of being witches. It situates the ṭonhī or witch as a key elaborating symbol that orders behaviour to determine who the socially included and excluded are in communities. Through the personal interviews and other ethnographic methods conducted over the course of many years, the author delves into the stories and practices related to witchcraft, its relations with modernity, and the relationship between violence and ideological norms in society. Insightful and detailed, this book will be of great interest to academics and researchers of anthropology, development studies, sociology, history, violence, gender studies, tribal studies and psychology. It will also be useful for readers in both historic and contemporary witchcraft practices as well as policy makers.
