Download or read book From Dartmouth to War written by Adrian Holloway and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adrian Holloway was only seventeen when he left the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth in 1940 and joined HMS Valiant as a Midshipman, sharing a gunroom with Midshipmen Terry Lewin and HRH Prince Philip. He arrived in the Mediterranean in time to witness the darkest days of the Mediterranean Fleet – providing cover for the Fleet Air Arm’s raid on Taranto, fighting at the Battle of Matapan and taking part in the evacuation of Crete – during which time the Royal Navy’s vessels were decimated. He also witnessed the sinking of HMS Barham, and after returning from an appointment to the Australian destroyer HMAS Nizam, was back on board Valiant when Italian frogmen mined her in Alexandria Harbour in 1941.In From Dartmouth to War Adrian Holloway presents a fascinating first-hand account of the war at sea, vividly recalling what it was like to be in battle whilst still little more than a schoolboy. He describes the transition from the safety of Dartmouth to the terror and confusion of the open ocean, at a time when Britain stood alone against the Axis. Complete with personal photographs, track charts and naval signals, this book provides an invaluable insight into the wartime activities of a junior officer.

Book excerpt: The Arizona State University Art Museum is renowned for its extensive and notable craft collection and features international acquisitions in wood, ceramic, and fiber. This book, edited by the museum's curators, uses the ASU collection to explore the idea of craft within a critical context, as both idea and action. Crafting a Continuum begins with the genesis of the craft collection and relates it to the historical development of craft in the United States and abroad, exploring both anthropological and cultural concepts of the field. Peter Held and Heather Sealy Lineberry present photographs of the museum's objects alongside essays by distinguished scholars to illuminate historical and contemporary trends. Sidebars and essays by writers in the craft field offer a broad overview of the future of contemporary craft.

Download or read book Shield of Empire written by Brian Lavery and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 789 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Royal Navy has always been seen as an English institution, despite a large Scottish contribution, from Admiral Duncan at Camperdown in 1797 to Andrew Cunningham in the Second World War. The Royal Navy's most dramatic effect on Scotland, aside from its role in the British Empire and European wars, was in suppressing the Jacobite campaigns from 1708 to 1746. This book breaks new ground in telling the stories of almost forgotten campaigns, such as the submarine war in the Firth of Forth in 1914-18. In two world wars, and since the 1960s, a large proportion of the Navy's power has been based in Scotland, from the Grand Fleet at Scapa Flow to Trident submarines at Faslane. Most British sailors of the Second World War had part of their training in Scotland, and the famous base at Tobermory was only one of many. Yet, the Navy never felt at home in Scotland. As one Scottish admiral put it, 'In both wars the Royal Navy flooded into Scotland to make use of our deep water ports and sea lochs for large-scale and safer anchorages. After each war the Navy unimaginatively retreated en masse to the Channel.' The book ends with a unique account of the setting up of the controversial missile bases in the Holy Loch and Gareloch. Brian Lavery then looks at the future in order to determine the effect devolution and possible independence might have on Scotland and the Royal Navy.

Commissioned between September 1939 and November 1941, they fought in the Battle of the Atlantic and on a variety of fronts. While the history of Americans serving in the Royal Air Force is well known, the story of these naval volunteers has not been previously told. Most trained at the Royal Naval College in Greenwich, but since foreign military service was against U.S. law, their names were never made public. Now, after years of research, their identities and the details of their contributions can be made known.

Book excerpt: Greg Growden, Chief Rugby Union correspondent at The Sydney Morning Herald, asked Australian identities to nominate and share their stories of sportspeople whom they have admired. Contributions he received include people who passed on a love of sport, coaches, international stars, underdog sporting teams and of course dads. At this moment in history, and indeed at any time, it is valuable to stop and reflect on people and events who through personal contact, or just knowledge of their existence, have helped each of us strive to do better, or made us feel better. As well as celebrating the spirit of sport, this collection provides an insight into who and what in sport inspires, arouses feelings in and motivates individuals, and illustrates that heroes still exist. Includes Wendy Harmer on Geoff Toovey, Forbes Carlile on Snowy Baker, Siobhan Paton on Daniel Kowalski, Mike Carlton on his dad sprinter Jim Carlton, Mike Coleman on the synchronised swim team, David Williamson on John Landy, Sally Loane on Bob Templeman, Premier Peter Beattie on Arthur Beetson, Susie Moroney on her brother, John O'Neill on Tim Horan, Martin Flanagan on Gypsy Lee, Rex Hunt on Greg Norman and Ron Barrassi, Ken Arthurson on Bozo Bob Fulton, The Yellow Wiggle Greg on Justin Langer, Garrie Hutchinson, Priya Cooper, Norman May, Eddie Jones on Ian Chappell, Ron Barrassi, Jeff Fenech, Jon Cleary, John Brogden MP on Wayne 'Junior' Pearce, Ted Egan, Warwick Hadfield, Ian Heads, Craig Young, Peter FitzSimons and Spiro Zavos on Keith Miller, David Pescud, Peter Fenton, Roy Masters on Tom Raudonikis, Kirsten Thomson on Susie O'Neill, Simon Poidevin on Evan Fraser, Max Presnell on the bucking bull Chainsaw, Alan Attwood on Cliff Young, Malcolm Knox, Tom Carroll, Gordon Bray, Mikey Robins on his dad, Jim Maxwell, Rob Sitch on Arnold Palmer, David Salter and General Cosgrove on John Eales.

Download or read book Report of the Re opened Formal Investigation Into the Loss of the FV Gaul written by David Steel and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2004 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication sets out the report of the re-opened formal investigation into the loss of FV Gaul, a fishing trawler last seen off the Norwegian coast in February 1974, resulting in the loss of its 36 crewmen. The original formal inquiry concluded that the vessel had foundered and capsized, without making any distress calls, after being battered by heavy seas. The report is divided into two sections. The first part includes: a brief historical account of the loss of FV Gaul, and the concerns surrounding its loss; the vessel's design features, the regulatory measures in place at the time it was built and its service history; the experience of its skipper and crew; a detailed account of its last voyage and the search and investigation undertaken after it went down; and examination of concerns that its loss was due to involvement in espionage activities during the Cold War, including evidence from two members of the Security Services. The second section looks at: the findings of the maritime accident investigation undertaken in 1998 and the underwater survey undertaken in 2002, including technology used; examination of possible theories to explain the cause of the loss, including whether the vessel was fishing at the time of the loss, whether a snagged submarine cable could have caused the incident, and the prevailing weather and sea conditions. The report concludes that it is probable FV Gaul capsized amid heavy seas, when water ran down open waste chutes and flooded its lower decks, rapidly disabling the crew who were subsequently unable to send a distress call. The report, therefore, rules out other explanations for the loss of the vessel such as collision, seizure by the Russians or any other hostile force, or being pulled down by a submarine due to a snagged fishing net.
