Kelby Ouchley chronicles the evolution of A. mississippiensis from "shieldcroc"--the last common ancestor of modern-day alligators, crocodiles, caimans, and gavials--to its current role as keystone of the ecological health of America's southern swamps and marshes. In Florida, the apex predator uses its snout and feet to clear muck from holes in the limestone bedrock. During the dry season, these small ponds or "alligator holes" provide refuge, food, and water for a variety of wildlife. In Louisiana, millions of dollars are spent on the bounty of the non-native nutria that overgraze marsh vegetation, but alligators prey on these coastal rodents free of charge. The loss of the American alligator would be a blow to biodiversity and an ecosystem disruption affecting all levels of the food chain. While the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed it from the endangered species list in 1987 and today regulates the legal trade of the animal and its products, Ouchley cautions us not to forget the lessons learned: human activities, from urban development to energy production, can still threaten the future of the gator and its southern wetland habitat.

Currently, populations in coastal South Carolina are considered Threatened, whereas populations in inland areas (such as the SRP) are still Endangered. Because of their legal status and economic and ecological importance, it is important to determine the environmental impacts of SRP operations on the local alligator population. The major objectives under the Endangered Species Program of the Comprehensive Cooling Water Study (CCWS) were as follows: (1) document and compare the present status and distribution of alligators on the SRP to previous surveys, in order to determine long-term changes in population abundance; (2) establish baseline population and ecological parameters of the Steel Creek population so that the ecological effects of L-Reactor operations can be determined, and (3) conduct ecological research on the immediate impacts of thermal effluents on American alligators. Gladden et al., (1985) summarized data on previous population surveys, temporal changes in the Par Pond population, preliminary results of the Steel Creek surveys and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL) research on the effects of thermal effluents. This report summarizes the current status of the SRP population, presents data on the abundance, movement patterns and activity cycles of the Steel Creek population, and presents additional data on the effect of cooling water releases on alligator ecology and behavior.

The other larger living alligator species is the Chinese alligator. Alligators come to us from a prehistoric era which makes these comeback kids even more amazing! They survived their prehistoric relatives all the way into the 21st century in spite of being hunted for their skins and for meat by both natives to America as well as by those who settled here! Alligators are not an endangered species, but they are legally protected, and they are classified as threatened because they a lot look like the American crocodile, which is an endangered species. As a result of earlier unregulated and unrestricted killing of the American Alligator, the alligator population noticeably decreased. Hunting restrictions in the 1940's and 50's slowed decline, but illegal poaching during the late 1950's and 1960's resulted in further decrease in populations. Extensive poaching continued until 1970 when an amendment to the federal Lacey Act made the interstate shipment of illegally-taken alligators a federal violation. Combined with reduced demand for alligator skins (brought about by outcries for protection of the species during the [politically active late 1960's and 1970's) poaching was nearly eliminated. These photographs were taken near Fort Myers Florida in the everglades, where the American alligator continues its comeback. Once again, we had to do nothing except refrain from what we were doing to change the course of this keystone species.

Ventral ossification occurs in alligators longer than 165 cm from both the eastern and western parts of the species range. Because of a lack of material from the central part of the alligator's range (Alabama and Mississippi), the nature of this variation cannot be determined.
