Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of, and the preliminary design criteria for, a Universal Pumping Unit to be incorporated with other components in comprising a standard decontaminating apparatus of superior type to replace the present models (M3A3 Truck Mounted, Standard; M6 Skid Mounted, Standard; and E15R1 Trailer Mounted, Proposed Standard). It is concluded that the utilization of a Universal Pumping Unit (Standard) to be incorporated as stated above is feasible, and it is recommended that the design and development of such a unit be furthered along the lines of the proposed Universal Pumping Unit set forth in this report. It is further concluded that it would be to the best interests of the Chemical Corps and National Defense to coordinate fully with the appropriate agencies of all services involved.

Book excerpt: The portable decontamination apparatus reported on herein is a modified and improved version of the advanced development unit previously delivered to the Air Force. The need for a modified and improved version of the advanced development unit became apparent during final testing when the solenoid operated inlet lines revealed operational limitations which resulted in unwanted system shut-downs. It also became apparent that the mobility capabilities, pumping system, electrical system, and spray pattern required improvements and that panel and spot lights were needed. The finalized design incorporates increased strength in the running gear, larger diameter wheels, a simplified pumping system, a simplified electrical system, the addition of panel and spot lights for night operation, and a wider range of spray patterns, using two nozzles instead of one. Ball floats have been used on all inlet lines, eliminating the solenoid valves, thereby increasing the reliability of the system while decreasing the cost. The portable decontaminating apparatus meets all Air Force requirements for mobility, quick set-up, operation with minimum personnel, transfer of various liquids, and aircraft/ground equipment decontamination on a flight line. The first-Watts Bar Steam Plant-was built as a part of TVA's first emergency program of the World War II period. Construction of the Johnsonville Steam Plant, with generating units of 125,000-kilowatt capability, began in May 1949. It was the first of seven large steam-electric projects constructed over a span of eight and a half years including the Korean War period. This mammoth building program resulted mainly from the increased power demands of the Atomic Energy Commission and other Federal defense agencies. Additional electric energy was required also by the expanding programs of private industry and the increased needs of commercial and domestic consumers in TVA's service area.
