Book The Persian Gulf and the West

Download or read book The Persian Gulf and the West written by Charles Kupchan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a broadly comparative and historical re-examination of the fundamental strategic dilemmas that confront the Western world in the Persian Gulf region. This systematic study of how the West has defined and dealt with its security interests in this region reveals three central strategic dilemmas: strategy versus capability, globalism versus regionalism, and unilateralism versus collectivism. The first part of the book focuses on US policy with particular emphasis on the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The author explains why there has been a persistent gap between American perceptions of the Middle East and the political and strategic realities of the region. The second part of the book examines the frustrated efforts of NATO members to form a cooperative response to their collective interests in the region.

    Book Details:

  • ISBN : 1626163359
  • Pages : 311 pages

Download or read book Crude Strategy written by Charles Louis Glaser and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the United States ask its military to guarantee the flow of oil from the Persian Gulf? If the US security commitment is in fact strategically sound, what posture should the military adopt to protect Persian Gulf oil? Charles L. Glaser and Rosemary A. Kelanic present a collection of new essays from a multidisciplinary team of political scientists, historians, and economists that provide answers to these questions. Contributors delve into a range of vital economic and security issues: the economic costs of a petroleum supply disruption, whether or not an American withdrawal increases the chances of oil-related turmoil, the internal stability of Saudi Arabia, budgetary costs of the forward deployment of US forces, and the possibility of blunting the effects of disruptions with investment in alternative energy resources. The result is a series of bold arguments toward a much-needed revision of US policy toward the Persian Gulf during an era of profound change in oil markets and the balance of power in the Middle East.

Book The Security of the Persian Gulf RLE Iran D

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Persian Gulf, important because of its vast energy resources, emerged into the limelight of geopolitics at the time of the British Labour government’s policy of withdrawal from East of Suez in 1968. Before 1968 it had been recognised that the Gulf lay in the legitimate sphere of influence of Britain, while the United States exerted its influence in the two pivotal littoral states of Iran and Saudi Arabia. The Soviets had been gaining influence in Iraq ever since the overthrow of the monarchy in 1958 and the Chinese were also fishing for influence by their support of the Popular Front for the Liberation of the Arabian Gulf. This book examines the political axes of the various super-powers with Iran and the Persian Gulf and discusses the implications of these problems for the issue of security in the region.

Book Gulf Security in the Twenty First Century

Download or read book Gulf Security in the Twenty First Century written by David E. Long and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 1998-08-27 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between regional instability and the preservation of global security is nowhere more sensitive than in the Gulf. Events since the 1990-1991 Gulf War continue to confirm the fragile interaction among states in the region and their susceptibility to external forces. Gulf Security in the Twenty-First Century brings together some of the foremost area experts to explore the most pressing issues, including military threats to the region, obstacles to economic development and socioeconomic harmonization, and challenges to political stability. In particular, the work examines Iran's often enigmatic foreign policy vis-à-vis its Gulf neighbors, Iraq's resurgent military threat, choices and constraints confronting US Middle East policy, and Europe's inability to identify and pursue a united policy to safeguard its economic interests in the area. These topics are further illuminated with an analysis of Russia's historical attempt at balancing foreign policy objectives in the Gulf with its enduring interests in Central Asia. The potentially explosive issues of religious radicalism and the challenges of democratic pluralism are discussed in an effort to ascertain the potential of political Islam to disturb or enhance regional security. Similarly, the problems inhibiting the settlement of territorial disputes in and around the Gulf are brought into focus to illustrate lingering historical tensions among neighboring states. To round out the book's topical coverage, several contributors shed light on the region's unfettered dependence on foreign labor, growing demographic pressures, associated social and economic transformations, and challenges to responsive public policy.

Book The Security of the Persian Gulf

Download or read book The Security of the Persian Gulf written by Hossein Amirsadeghi and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the revolution in Iran and the downfall of the Shah, the whole political balance of the Persian Gulf has been overturned. The war between Iraq and Iran is the first evidence of destabilization but much more could follow especially if the Soviet Union attempted any direct intervention. With their new found bases on the Iraq/Afghanistan border, the Soviets are only a day's drive from Iran's Gulf ports and the Khuzestan oil fields. Sixty per cent of the non-communist world's oil supply is shipped through the Straits of Hormuz and any threat to this flow would jeopardize world peace. The outcome of the political tug-of-war in Tehran is crucial to the future political map of the Persian Gulf. The collapse of the Khomeini regime will eventually come about but the question is who or what will replace it? Since the Iranian revolution the long-standing Washington-Tehran axis has been broken but neither of the superpowers has been able to create a new power base in Iran or Iraq. If committed Soviet supporters do seize power in the region, the prospects for an East-West confrontation over the Gulf's vital energy resources become much more likely. This book, by international authorities on the region, examines these issues and a range of related problems which compromise the security issue in the Persian Gulf. -- from Book Jacket.

Book Major Threats for Oil Security in Persian Gulf Region

Download or read book Major Threats for Oil Security in Persian Gulf Region written by Robert Fiedler and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Politik - Internationale Politik - Thema: Frieden und Konflikte, Sicherheit, Note: 1,6, Macquarie University, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Particularly emerging nations such as China, India, or Brazil will contribute to increased oil consumption, rising from 83 million barrel per day in 2004 to 118 million barrels per day in 2030 (Energy Information Administration, 2007). In the face of this situation, it comes with no surprise that "the world is now entering a challenging period for energy supply, due to the limited resources and production problems now facing conventional (easily accessible) oil" (Energy Committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 14.10.2005). Therefore, oil supply security has become a priority in political agendas and given an "extreme dependence on supply from the Middle East holding more than 60 % of the global oil reserves" (Energy Committee at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, 14.10.2005) this region has become a focus for oil importing countries. Since this region has witnessed a variety of wars, conflicts, terrorist attacks and other disruptions that caused large losses of oil supply (Horsnell, 2000, p. 2) security issues in the Persian Gulf have become a matter of international interest in order to secure the oil supply from this region. In the following this paper will analyze major security issues in the Persian Gulf Area; such are inter-state conflict, the unsolved Israel-Palestine question, terrorism, as well as the problem of under-investment and domestic instabilities in some of the most important countries within the region. Furthermore, this paper will outline possible impacts of these security issues on the economic security in the rest of the world.

This book, first published in 1981, considers some of the challenges facing the region following recent developments such as the fall of the Shah and the proclamation of the Islamic Republic in Iran, the Soviet presence in Afghanistan, the formation of an American task force to intervene in the area, the failure of the Camp David agreement and the Iran-Iraq war.
