Book The South Its Economic Geographic Development Classic Reprint

Download or read book The South Its Economic Geographic Development Classic Reprint written by A. E. Parkins and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South, Its Economic-Geographic Development This volume is an attempt to describe the civilization of the South, mainly in its economic-geographic aspects, and to interpret this civilization in terms of its regional setting and its historical antecedents. In brief, it is a study of the evolution of Southern civilization. To develop the theme thus outlined the author considers his task to be: First, to describe the Southern environment, i.e., natural and man-modified - the surface features, the climate, the biota, the soils, the mineral and power resources, and the natural transportational facilities. Second, to describe, interpret, and explain, in so far as possible, the cultural features and patterns and institutions that Europeans and their descendants have evolved, in their occupancy of this region, the South. Cultural features and patterns as here used embrace means of transportation and communication, cities, rural and industrial landscapes, types of agriculture, mines, factories and workshops, and what not. Some of the cultural characteristics are to be read from the cultural landscapes; others do not exist or have not existed in material forms, perhaps merely in the mind of man as an idea, ideal, tendency, or pattern of thinking. The author has made no conscious effort to keep the material presented in this volume within the recognized boundaries of any one or two academic subject-matter fields. Archeology and history show that cultures in the course of time undergo changes, which as a rule may be correlated with advances made in mans economic development, i.e., the improvements he makes in his attempt to wrest a living from his environment. Economic goods with which he satisfies his needs are produced in increasing amounts and with a relative decrease in the expenditure of human and physical energy. Stages, steps, eras, periods, or epochs are recognized and so recorded in the advancing order. The writer (along with many other geographers) recognizes a normal order of economic development and a corresponding normal order of cultural development. Such an order is considered normal because the majority of regions in their economic evolution seem to have followed this order. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Southern Sidelights: A Picture of Social and Economic Life in the South a Generation Before the War It is not a history in the broad sense, but deals with material that is often neglected in the philosophy based upon human records. Details of politics are always of interest, because of the personality of leaders and their undue importance in the public eye. Behind politics, though, influencing and being influenced, are the real conditions of a people, - their habits of thought, their modes of action, and their industrial, agricultural, edu ostional, and commercial status. These may be truly estimated only by marshalling the figures in the light of contemporaneous conditions, moral, intellectual, and phys ical. Such a task has been attempted in this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Agricultural Situation, Vol. 14: A Brief Summary of Economic Conditions; November 1, 1930 Reported yields of spring Wheat on October 1 showed little change from earlier prospects other than a small per cent increase in produc tion of durum and indicate a crop of bushels of durum and bushels of other spring wheat, making a total of 000 bushels of all spring wheat. The production of durum wheat is practically the same as produc tion last year, but it is bushels, or about 24 per cent, less than the average of the previous five years, due Wholly to a smaller acreage in North Dakota. The crop of other spring wheat is about bushels greater than the crop of last year but bushels less than the 5-year average. The cr0p of spring wheat other than durum is smaller than usual in North Dakota and much smaller in Montana owing to drought conditions, while it is somewhat larger than usual in South Dakota and Washington. The durum wheat yield of 12 bushels per acre is above the bushels secured in 1929 but below the 10-year average yield of bushels. The yield of other spring wheat, reported at bushels per acre, is also. Above last year's yield of bushels. The quality of the durum wheat this year is reported at per cent, or a few points poorer than usual and much poorer than last year. Other spring wheat shows a quality of or a shade better than average, but it also is 2 per cent poorer than last year. The total crop of wheat, spring and winter types combined, is now estimated at bushels which is bushels greater than the crop of 1929 but only bushels above the previous 5-year average and bushels below the big crop of 1928. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Black and White: Land, Labor, and Politics in the South IN discussing the political and industrial problems of the South, I base my conclusions upon a personal knowledge of the condition of classes in the South, as Well as upon the ample data furnished by writers who have pursued, in their way, the question before me. That the colored people of the country will yet achieve an honorable status in the national indus tries of thought and activity, I believe, and try to make plain. In the discussion of the land and labor problem I but pursue the theories advocated by more able and experienced men, in the attempt to show that the laboring classes of any country pay all the taxes, in the last analysis, and that they are systematically victimized by legislators, corporations and syndicates.
