This book was released on 2018-06-21 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The building of a card model of Liverpool Cathedral needed a lot of research, and the Vere E. Cotton's work The Book of Liverpool Cathedral was the most helpful of all the sourcees of information. Written by a long-serving member of the Cathedral Building Committee it was a treasure trove of early photographs and drawings. The reason for the drastic alteration of the building from the competition-winning three tower building to one with a single tower in 1910 was never explained by the architect, and for 84 years people have looked at the architecture trying to solve the mystery without success. Because the project made the author look at the cathedral from a viewpoint other than at its architecture, which nobody appears to have done before, he discovered the secret purpose of, and the motivation behind, the radical redesign of 1910. In his book, Cotton virtually admits that he was mystified at some aspects of the building. Strangely, it also contains the clues which helped resolve the mystery. So this work is the sequel to The Book of Liverpool Cathedral as it exposes the architect's secret and explains how and why the present design evolved.

Book The Secret History of Liverpool Cathedral

Download or read book The Secret History of Liverpool Cathedral written by Geoffrey Johnson and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-11-28 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the author started building a model of Liverpool Cathedral in 1994 he had to research its history and architecture. Of all the published information one book stands out as by far the most useful. It is Vere E. Cotton's work The Book of Liverpool Cathedral, published by Liverpool University Press in 1964 on behalf of the Cathedral Committee, but at the time the book was written construction of the Nave had only just begun and needed supplementing with photographs. Because the project made the author look at the Cathedral from a viewpoint other than at its architecture he discovered the secret purpose of, and the motivation behind, the radical redesign of 1910. In his book Cotton virtually admits that he was mystified at some aspects of the building. Strangely, it also contained the clues which helped the author resolve the mystery although Cotton seemed not to have been aware of them. So this work is the sequel to The Book of Liverpool Cathedral, as it reveals the architect's secret and explains how and why the present design evolved, which Cotton was unable to do.

Book excerpt: By the 1930s the Liverpool School of Architecture was the most famous British school of architecture in the world, promoting modern architecture and city planning internationally. This book looks at the cultural environment in Liverpool at the turn of the twentieth century which enabled such an important institution to come to fruition. It examines attitudes towards design practice through the work of patrons, practitioners, institutions and theorists in the city, and considers the way their ideas were formed by national and international trends. From a city microcosm of contesting design aesthetics emerged a unique synthesis that was to exert a profound international influence in architectural and planning design.
