Book Perspectives on the Social Sciences in Canada

Download or read book Perspectives on the Social Sciences in Canada written by Tom N. Guinsberg and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1974-12-15 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers included in this volume were originally presented at a conference to commemorate the opening of the Social Science Centre at the University of Western Ontario in 1973. Participants were asked to take stock of the development of their disciplines in Canada, to assay the contours of current endeavours, and to comment upon avenues of future research. Their efforts mark what is believed to be the first collective assessment of the social sciences in Canada. The contributors include: Nathan Keyfitz on sociology, C.B. Macpherson on political science; H.G. Johnson on economics; Ramsay Cook on history; and M. Rokeach on the place of values in Canadian social science. Commentaries on the papers are also included. Each author has addressed himself to one or more of the following matters: the degree to which the disciplines as practised in Canada are linked to or differentiated from their practice elsewhere; the benefits and drawbacks of a 'nationalistic' approach to scholarship in the social sciences; the contributions of Canadian scholarship to the study of society in general and Canadian society in particular; the interaction among the social sciences in Canada and the need for inter-disciplinary studies; and the unfulfilled agenda of Canadian social science. The assessments thus delineate the peculiar problems of the social sciences in Canada as well as some of the overall problems within and among the disciplines themselves.

Download or read book The Social Sciences in Canada written by Donald Fisher and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Sciences in Canada is about the background and history of the Social Science Federation of Canada in honour of its fifty years of national activity. There can be little doubt that during the last fifty years the federation, and its predecessors, have had a substantial impact on the development of the social sciences in Canada. The history of this organization is probably the best barometer that we have for recording the changes that have occurred in the relation between social scientists and Canadian society.

Book Current Research on Information Technologies and Society

Download or read book Current Research on Information Technologies and Society written by Jennifer Earl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research on communication and information technologies is of growing importance to sociology and the interdisciplinary examination of communication and (new) media. This volume includes eight chapters examining recent developments in the field, illustrating the maturation, vibrancy, and diversity of this field of study as well as pointing to rich new avenues for scholarly exploration. Contributions aptly chart three key developments that characterize current research on communication and digital media. First, chapters demonstrate the maturation of work on measurement, demonstrating the importance of refining measurements of online activities and their consequences. For instance, contributions evaluate: social network measures frequently used in online research; alternative measures for online activity; and alternative measures of Twitter activity. Second, the volume showcases continued work on understanding user behaviour, including research on the consequence of reward systems similar to badges and on the limitations of purely technological solutions to social dilemmas in emergency preparedness. Finally, chapters identify emerging questions for the field related to social media, such as research on potential privacy and identity implications of social media, different dispositions toward social media use, and variation in levels of social media usage. This book was originally published as a special issue of Information, Communication & Society.

Download or read book Nation Building Education and Culture in India and Canada written by K. Gayithri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides comparative perspectives on issues related to education, culture, sustainable development and nation-building in India and Canada. It takes cognizance of current research in Indo-Canadian comparative studies and is meant to facilitate further research in these areas. It importantly highlights the trends and growth areas in comparative social science and humanities research between the countries. The chapters in this volume discuss the research that scholars have recently undertaken in both countries and the impact that such comparative research has on developing partnerships, learning methodologies, and socio-cultural narratives that empower interdisciplinary research. The chapter authors take up important issues related to community college development, mental health in education, multilingual education, indigenous populations and their education and development. They discuss issues related to bilateral and foreign trade agreements as well as policies of the two countries on climate change research. Lastly, they discuss indigenous performance cultures and sports in the two countries and the long history of migration from India to Canada. The volume is of interest to a wide readership from the humanities and social sciences, particularly readers interested in Indo-Canadian scholarship.
