Download or read book Welsh Castle Builders written by John Marshall and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2022-12-02 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Edwardian castles of north Wales were built by a Savoyard master mason, but also by many other artisans from Savoy. What is more extraordinary, is that the constables of Flint, Rhuddlan, Conwy and Harlech were also Savoyards, the Justiciar and Deputy Justiciar at Caernarfon were Savoyards and the head of the English army leading the relief of the sieges of Flint and Rhuddlan was a future Count of Savoy. The explanatory story is fundamentally of two men, the builder of castles, Master James of St George and Justiciar Sir Othon de Grandson, and the relationship of these two men with King Edward I. But it is also the story of many others, a story that begins with the marriage of Alianor de Provence to Edward’s father, Henry III, and the influx of her kinsmen to England, such as Pierre de Savoie. It is impossible to understand the development of the castles in north Wales without an understanding of the Savoyards, where they came from and their impact on English and Welsh history. The defining work of Arnold Taylor in exploring the Savoyard history of Welsh castles is now many years past, and mostly out of print, it is time for the story to be revisited and expanded upon, in the light of new evidence.

Download or read book Letters from Wales written by Joan Abse and published by Seren Books. This book was released on 2000 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating anthology of letters spans over eight centuries of life in Wales and provides an enthralling commentary on its historical development from the medieval times to the 20th century. The letters bring Welsh history to life through vivid vignettes of personal experience and all too human opinion. While seemingly devoted to events in Wales, the correspondents are also measuring Wales's place in Britain, Europe, and the world. These letters are from kings, princes, and bishops to writers, artists, and politicians; from the medieval machinations of Glyndwr and Hotspur, to industrial disputes; from Oliver Cromwell to Lloyd George; George Fliot to Dylan Thomas; Edward I to Evelyn Waugh. Here too, are letters from Nathaniel Hawthorne and John Cooper Powys about emigration to America for religious reasons or because of the 19th century industrial revolution. These letters provide a richly textured, informative, and entertaining book about this fascinating country, its history and its people.

Download or read book Magna Carta written by David Carpenter and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'David Carpenter deserves to replace Sir James Holt as the standard authority, and an unfailingly readable one too.' Ferdinand Mount, TLS 'An invaluable new commentary' Jill Leopore, New Yorker With a new commentary by David Carpenter "No free man shall be seized or imprisoned, or stripped of his rights or possessions, or outlawed or exiled, or deprived of his standing in any other way, nor will we proceed with force against him, or send others to do so, except by the lawful judgment of his equals or by the law of the land." Magna Carta, forced on King John in 1215 by rebellion, is one of the most famous documents in world history. It asserts a fundamental principle: that the ruler is subject to the law. Alongside a new text and translation of the Charter, David Carpenter's commentary draws on new discoveries to give an entirely fresh account of Magna Carta's text, origins, survival and enforcement, showing how it quickly gained a central place in English political life. It also uses Magna Carta as a lens through which to view thirteenth-century society, focusing on women and peasants as well as barons and knights. The book is a landmark in Magna Carta studies. 2015 is the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta's creation - an event which will be marked with exhibitions, commemorations and debates in all the countries over whose constitutions and legal assumptions the shadow of Magna Carta hangs.
