Book excerpt: There is concern that buried sumps containing saltwater drilling fluids in NWT may not remain sufficiently frozen to prevent contamination of surrounding environment, due to freezing point depression by salt and disturbance of permafrost. Study started in September, 1985, to monitor buried salty sump located at Tweed Lake M-47 wellsite. Fixed frequency, electromagnetic (EM) surveys used to locate areas of high conductivity indicating areas of potential salt seepage and thawed sump fluids. Use of EM surveys for detection of salt in permafrost areas had not been documented. 2 potential salt plumes were discovered. Neither extended more than 40 m from sump. In both cases other phenomena might account for high conductivity readings and periodical EM surveys need to be continued.
