From Paris there have been received 24 volumes, namely: Ile Royale, 1740 to 1762, 18 volumes; Missions, 1760 to 17 68, 2 volumes; Ile St. Jean, 1717 to 1758, 2 volumes; Prise de Louisbourg, 1758, 2 volumes. These have all been shelf-marked and placed on the shelves, making an addition to the previous collection of 88 volumes of State papers. The work is conducted with the greatest care, so as to have exact transcripts of the documents that no errors may occur in the copies. Instructions have been given that whenever an apparent error is found in the original it shall be indicated by a slight pencil mark so as to save correspondence. The utmost regard is paid to economy in conducting the work of the branch, so far as that does not affect its efficiency. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Canadian Archives, 1886 The work done by the colonial tr00ps in 1745 was such as to inspire Waldo with confidence in the success of the plan he laid before Pitt, in 1757, for an attack on Louisbourg by a large combined military and naval force early in the following spring. Within twenty-three days from the time of the landing in 1745, the colonial troops had erected five fascine batteries against the town, mounted with 42, 22 and 18-pounders; mortars of 13, 11 and 9 inches diameter, and some cohorns. These had to be transported for two miles over a morass, so deep that the cannon sunk in it out of sight; horses and oxen were of no use, nor could wheels be employed. Everything had to be done by the men themselves, although l,5oo of them at one time were incapable of duty from uxes. Sleighs were made by which the cannon and mortars were transported by men accustomed to working in the woods, and who, on this occasion, were knee deep in mud and water for days, with cold nights, from the effects of which they had no proper tents to guard them. According to the answer made by the War Office to Mr. G. F. Parkman, the sergeant. Was alive and in Chelsea Hospital in 1802, but if the evidence of the binding is to be accepted (and that it is a home made binding is evident) he was alive after 1806, the cover being made from stiff paper containing the conditions of a contract by Boulton of Birmingham, the partner of James Watt, for coining copper money, which is dated in 1806. The marbling which originally concealed the printing has worn off, so that the contract can be easily read. Mr. Parkman in describing the manuscript in his cousin's possession accurately describes the copy here, except that in the latter, the bottom parts of the title and of five pages following it are illegible, only the preface, however, which covers three pages, being seriously injured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Supplement to Dr. Brymner's Report on Canadian Archives, 1899 It is evident, besides, that the mass of documents is too large to be read and thoroughly examined by one person, unless he were to devote his whole life to the task and as a matter of fact not one of our historians has, up to this date, been able to master more than one - fourth or one-third of this voluminous correspondence. In fact there are whole series which have never been touched. The advantage of a real analysis will be that inquirers will be enabled to form promptly a tolerably accurate idea of the contents of a document, and to decide whether its perusal may be of use to them. It is, I think, to be regretted that Series C of La Correspondance Generale, the most useful portion of these archives, was not more systematically dealt with in con formity with that plan for these abstracts, as a whole, would then have been nothing less than a real history of New France, under} a special form, and in any case the work of future historians would have been greatly simplified. It is too late to return to what has been done, and correct what I consider to have been an error, but I venture to express the hope that my successor may be instructed to adhere to a system affording so many advantages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on Canadian Archives, 1892 The establishment of two systems of law, the French and the English, in the determination of certain classes of questions led to doubts as to which was' applicable to cases arising out of disputes co'ncerning lands held in free and common soccage, the question being whether these were governed in respect to descent and dower, by the laws of England, or by those of Canada. The question was submitted on the 1st of July, 1803 (no. 60) by Milnes to the Colonial Secretary (q. 92, p. 159) at the same time transmitting the various and contradictory opinions of the Judges. Chief Justice Sewell and Justices Dunn, Williams, Ogden and Davidson held that the laws of England should govern Chief Justice Monk and Justice Panet and de, bonne took the opposite View, each of these Opinions being supported by elaborate arguments, which follow the covering letter from Milnes. On the 9th of January, 1804, the Colonial Secretary transmitted the report of the Attorney and Solicitor General for his guidance, (q. 93, p.
