Book Recent Social Trends in Canada 1960 2000

Download or read book Recent Social Trends in Canada 1960 2000 written by Lance W. Roberts and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian society has changed dramatically since 1960. This work captures the scope and range of these changes through a systematic documentation of seventy-eight social trends. The introduction summarizes and locates the major waves of change. The authors then document each trend in relation to eighteen thematic groups that include age, community, women, labour, management, stratification, social relations, the state, mobilizing institutions, social forces, ideologies, households, lifestyle, leisure, education, integration, and attitudes and values. In contrast to many recent works and journalistic reports, Recent Social Trends in Canada concentrates on the trajectory of change rather than on current events. It provides a longitudinal context in which unfolding events can be interpreted in a broader historical and international context. Comparable volumes in the McGill-Queen's Comparative Charting of Social Change series describe similar tendencies in the United States, Quebec, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, and Bulgaria, making it possible to situate the Canadian experience in a global context.

Book Reporting the Road to Brexit

Download or read book Reporting the Road to Brexit written by Anthony Ridge-Newman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together leading international scholars to explore the connection between Brexit and the media. The referendum and the activism on both sides of the campaign have been of significant interest to the media in the UK and around the world. How these factors have been represented in the media and the role of the media in constructing the referendum narrative are central to assisting the development in our understanding of how UK and global democracy is being manifested in contemporary times. This book explores these topics through presenting a wide range of perspectives from research conducted by leading international scholars, and concludes with an assessment of the potential democratic and international implications for the future. By grappling with a highly important and controversial topic in a comparative and varied way, the volume contributes to theoretical debates about the nature and role of the media in complex social, political and cultural contexts.

Book Much Ado about Culture

Download or read book Much Ado about Culture written by Archibald Lloyd Keith Acheson and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2009-10-27 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Canada, the audio-visual and print industries are referred to as the cultural industries, whereas the United States calls them the entertainment industries. These language distinctions are accompanied by different domestic policies and political discourses. The United States has relatively open policies toward these activities, while Canada has adopted an inward-looking approach. Failure to integrate cultural industries into NAFTA and WTO has led to trade disputes between Canada and the United States over copyrights, television licensing, violence in media, and discriminatory magazine policy, indicating the need for an agreed-upon process for settling cultural trade disputes. Much Ado about Culture explores the differing sets of policies--cultural nationalism versus the open option--and the resulting conflicts in the context of technological developments as well as international agreements dealing with trade, investment, copyright, and labor movements. The Canadian cultural industries are examined, from film and television production and distribution to broadcasting, publishing, and sound recording. Several areas of recent conflict, such as Sports Illustrated, Country Music Television, and Borders Books, highlight the types of policies disputed, the process followed, and the conclusions reached. Finally, the authors propose an alternative approach to constraining national cultural policies by international agreement that would allow the gains from openness to be realized while serving legitimate cultural concerns. Authored by the acknowledged experts on trade disputes in the cultural arena, this book will be essential reading for international economists, policymakers, and lawyers interested in the cultural industries. Keith Acheson and Christopher Maule are Professors of Economics, Carleton University, Ontario.

Book Canadian Culture in a Globalized World

Download or read book Canadian Culture in a Globalized World written by Garry Neil and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first trade deal with the US in 1984, Canada has insisted on a "cultural exemption" to ensure that governments were free to protect Canadian culture and to restrict foreign ownership and limit foreign content in the media. Negotiators and government ministers considered the cultural exemption key to reassuring Canadians that the deal did not undermine our cultural sovereignty. In every trade deal since, culture has been a contentious issue. Media giants and foreign governments have pushed for unlimited access to Canada. Ottawa has worked with cultural industries to maintain the cultural exemption. Garry Neil has been close to every one of these negotiations, and has been a key advisor to cultural groups on trade deals. He has been part of the international initiative to assert the importance of cultural diversity in the world, and to create effective measures to guarantee it. This book reflects his experience trying to ensure that the reality matches the rhetoric when it comes to culture. As he sees it, in spite of the claims, Canadian cultural policies and programs have been steadily restricted by successive trade deals. He explains how this has happened, and what needs to be done for Canada to maintain our cultural sovereignty and creative life in the face of multinational corporations and their government supporters who are promoting a world monoculture.

Book How Ottawa Spends

Download or read book How Ottawa Spends written by G. Bruce Doern and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1983 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Ottawa Spends, some of the country's top political analysts get inside the byzantine world of federal decision-making, shedding light on the real priorities of the political parties. Among their findings: federal spending cuts do not necessarily "stick", because affected ministers are often given an offsetting package of funds for different purposes; while Ottawa has become the country's biggest advertiser (close to $60 million in 1982-83), it has increasing trouble discerning between information and propaganda; because they are afraid of losing their regional blocs of support, none of the federal parties is willing to behave like a truly national party. Published in 1983, How Ottawa Spends is an eye-opening look at federal spending priorities.

Book excerpt: The digital world has impacted the way Canadians socialize and interact with others, teach and learn, conduct business, experience culture, fight political battles, and acquire knowledge. The traditional forms of media, newspapers, radio, and television are being replaced by digital media which is fast, sporadic, and sometimes inaccurate. As a result, Canada is experiencing a number of overlapping crises simultaneously: a crisis in traditional media, a crisis in public broadcasting, a crisis in news and journalism, and a crisis in citizen engagement.
