Book A History of the University of South Carolina 1940 2000

Download or read book A History of the University of South Carolina 1940 2000 written by Henry H. Lesesne and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes the transformation of one of the nation's oldest public institutions of higher learning into a modern research university The history of the modern University of South Carolina (originally chartered as South Carolina College in 1801) describes the significant changes in the state and in the character of higher education in South Carolina. World War II, the civil rights struggle, and the revolution in research and South Carolina's economy transformed USC from a small state university in 1939, with a student body of less than 2,000 and an annual budget of $725,000, to a 1990 population of more than 25,000 and an annual budget of $454 million. Then the University was little more than a small liberal arts college; today the university is at the head of a statewide system of higher education with eight branch campuses. Henry H. Lesesne recounts the historic transformation of USC into a modern research university, grounding that change in the context of the modernization of South Carolina and the South in general. The half century from 1940 to 1990 wrought great changes in South Carolina and its most prominent university. State and national politics, the challenges of funding modern higher educations, and the explosive growth of intercollegiate sports are among other elements of the University that were transformed. Lesesne describes with candor and impressive research how the University of South Carolina and, indeed, all of the state's higher education system emerged from a past limited by racism and poverty and began to measure its aspirations by national educational standards.

Book Research and Relevant Knowledge

Download or read book Research and Relevant Knowledge written by Roger L. Geiger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of American research universities to international preeminence constitutes one of the most important episodes in the history of higher education. Research and Relevant Knowledge follows Geiger's earlier volume on American research universities from 1900 to 1940. This second work is the first study to trace this momentous development in the post-World War II period. It describes how the federal government first relied on university scientists during the war, and how the resulting relationship set the pattern for the postwar mushrooming of academic research. The first half of the book analyzes the development of the postwar system of academic research, exploring the contributions of foundations, defense agencies, and universities. The second half depicts the rise of the ""golden age"" of academic research in the years after Sputnik (1957) and its eventual dissolution at the end of the 1960s graduate education. When the federal patron soon reduced its largesse, university students took the lead in challenging the putative hegemony of academic research. The loss of consensus quickly brought the malaise of the 1970s--stagnation, frustration, and equivocation about the research role. The final chapter appraises the renaissance of the 1980s, based largely on a rapprochement with the private sector, and ends by evaluating the embattled status of research universities at the beginning of the 1990s.Research and Relevant Knowledge provides the first authoritative analytical account of American research universities during their most fateful half-century. It will be of critical importance to all those concerned with the future of higher education in the United States.

Book Columbia College

  • Pages : 1260 pages

Download or read book Columbia College written by Paulina Ann Batterson and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbia College, formerly known as Christian College, was founded in 1851 in the small frontier town of Columbia, Missouri. Touted as the first women's college west of the Mississippi River, Columbia College emerged as virtually a sister college to the University of Missouri, sharing leadership, faculty, and curriculum. Covering each of the school's presidential administrations, Columbia College examines all aspects of the college--academic, administrative, financial, athletic, and student life. Particular emphasis is placed on the role various individuals played over the years. Although created through the zealous efforts of progressive leaders of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the college was bound by its charter to be nondenominational--an issue that sometimes led to passionate sectarian quarrels within the fledgling institution. Despite pre-Civil War political differences, denominational rivalries, and personality clashes, the college struggled to survive. Through 150 years of continuity and change, Columbia College has tenaciously upheld its liberal-arts tradition as a teaching-centered institution, seeking innovative ways to broaden educational horizons and meet the needs of new generations. From the sheltered environment of Christian Female College, Columbia College has evolved into a modern coeducational institution with twenty-four military and civilian extended campuses across the United States and in Puerto Rico and a thriving evening campus that specializes in adult education. Columbia College will be of great interest to Columbia College alumni, as well as to anyone with an interest in liberal arts and adult education. Those wishing to preserve the endangered tradition of the small private college will find the Columbia College experience not only an inspiration, but also a lesson in creativity, loyalty, and dedication.
