Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Trigintennial Meeting With a Biographical and Statistical Record: Of the Class of 1867, Yale; 1867 1897 My Dear Classmates: If any apology is necessary for the long delay incident to the preparation of the "Trigintennial" Record, a word as to its arrangement will convince you that time and labor have been the two important factors in accomplishing the work. The previous Class Records, published in 1870, '73, '77 and '87, have been almost entirely revised, to admit of interesting Class data and items. The order of arrangement in the biographical sketch of each member embraces: (a) The name of his father and mother, and the place and time of his birth. (b) Where he fitted for College. (c) A short sketch of his Ancestry. (d) What occupation he has been engaged in since graduating or leaving the Class, up to the present time. (e) His marriage, the birth of children, what schools they attended, etc. Also the deaths that have occurred in his family. (f) The College Societies he belonged to, and the honors and rank he obtained while in College. photographs of each member, so far as I have been able to obtain them, form an important feature of the book. The plan of having two photographs of each member on one page, the one representing him as he looked when he graduated and the other as he now looks, had its origin with the Class of '62, and our Committee adopted their idea. Book excerpt: In the fourteenth century, the Roman Catholic Church reigned supreme in England. The first break from the Church occurred in the early 1500s when King Henry VII wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine. The King's break with the Roman Catholic Church created the Anglican Church (Church of England) which, though not entirely Protestant, nonetheless allowed a revival of Protestantism. Many of these Protestants were called Puritans "because of their wish to purify and reform the State Church." Religious persecution continued through the 1600s, however, for any group that varied too far from the teachings of the Church of England. The Pilgrims evolved from the Puritans. The author endeavors "to make plain something of the exalted character of the men and women whom preeminently the world has agreed to call the Pilgrims...." who "maintained steadily their lofty intellectual, moral, and religious standards and soon exerted an enlightening influence upon the world out of all proportion to the smallness of their colony." This informative and readable history includes biographical sketches of Robert Browne, William Brewster, William Bradford, and John Robinson, as well as many notes on lesser known but nonetheless important early Pilgrims. The Pilgrim towns of Scrooby and Austerfield in England are described in detail, as is the now-famous Plymouth Colony of 1620 in Massachusetts. The author describes the colony in detail, devoting chapters to its early life, commercial history, and first year of existence. This book was originally printed as a series of weekly articles in 1893 for members of the Scrooby Clubs, a nationwide collection of individuals associated with the Congregational Church. Book excerpt: He has also been criticized for championing the gold standard, for breaking the Great Strike of 1877, for inconsistent support of civil-service reform, and for being an ineffectual politician. Hoogenboom contends that these evaluations are largely false. Previous scholars, he says, have failed to appreciate Hayes's limited options and have misrepresented his actions in their depictions of an overly cautious, nonvisionary president. In fact, he was strikingly modern in his efforts to enlarge the power of the office, which he used as his own bully pulpit to rouse public support for his goals. Chief among these goals, Hoogenboom shows, was equality for all Americans. Throughout his presidency and long afterwards, Hayes worked steadfastly for reforms that would encourage economic opportunity, distribute wealth more equitably, diminish the conflict between capital and labor, and ultimately enable African-Americans to achieve political equality.
