It includes specific case studies of the experiences of racism in twenty-first century Ireland alongside a number of historical case studies that examine how modern Ireland came to marginalize ethnic minorities. Various chapters examine responses by the Irish state to Jewish refugees before, during and after the Holocaust, asylum seekers and Travellers. Other chapters examine policy responses to and academic debates on racism in Ireland. Oral history has proved paramount in enabling such groups to document their pasts, pasts which until recently had been occluded and often-ignored. This work explores the genre that is oral history through the prism that is the construction of the ‘Other’ in society and with particular reference to two minorities whose histories share a range of similar characteristics. In examining this process, it is possible to trace the transformation of folklore and storytelling into documented historical narrative.

She also recognizes the singing traditions of other ethnic groups on the island of Ireland including Orange-Order, Ulster-Scots and Traveller song. In so doing, she shows the disparity between native conceptions and native realities in respect to Irish cultural Identity.
