Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College, June, 1888, to June, 1893 From recent investigation it appears that our classmate edward lewis stevens, who was killed at the battle of Boykin's Mills, April 18, 1865, was probably the last Union officer killed in the late war; and in this connection it is interesting to recall the fact that our classmate, horace sargent dunn, who died May 22, 1862, was the first Harvard undergraduate who died in the war. Certainly, then, the Class of 1863 can claim to have shown its loyalty to the country from first to last. There are few friendships in life so valuable and so endur ing as those formed in college days. They have a peculiar charm, which is fully appreciated by those only who have enjoyed them. They should be cherished, and are worth preserving. I know of no better way of accomplishing this than for us all to see and hear more of one another. If this record, then, shall answer the questions which one classmate would naturally ask of another at this time, and shall serve to rekindle our interest in one another, and shall strengthen the friendships begun so long ago, it will have accomplished its purpose. It will thus help us to renew our youth, and make a happy and joyous occasion on this thirtieth anniversary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College, June, 1863, to June, 1888 In response to my printed circular of March 1, 1888, asking for information, out of one hundred and two living graduates I have received answers or reports from all; and out of seventeen who were members of the class during a part of the course, I have received answers from sixteen. During the last five years we have lost by death lunt and moriarty; and among those who were in the class for a portion of the course, ryan and haslett. I have followed the precedent adopted in my last Report, and included por traits of these deceased classmates in this volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College: June, 1893, to June, 1903 The last Class Report was issued in June, 1893, on the Thirtieth Anniversary of our graduation. The present Report covers the years from June, 1893, to June, 1903, our Fortieth Anniversary. This is the period of our maturity. In these ten years we have done, for weal or for woe, the chief work of our lives. The influence that the Class has exerted upon the world's history and progress must be looked for in these pages. The record may not be remarkable for achievement, but is one of which we have no need to be ashamed. At the time of the last Report, out of one hundred and twenty graduates, ninety-six were living. At the present time, seventy-six are living. We have lost in ten years twenty classmates, - an average of two a year, - among whom are included many who have shed lustre on the Class, who have contributed to the renown it has gained, and who have been deeply enshrined in our hearts. First and foremost, is Lincoln, our Class Secretary, faithful and true, ever devoted to the interests of the Class, whose presence and kindly greeting added an attraction to all our meetings, and from whom it is hard indeed to realize that we have parted, of whom, however, we may well say "To live in hearts we leave behind Is not to die." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College: July, 1863 to July, 1866 The expense of printing the Report, at present prices, may be large; and it is hoped that all who feel disposed will contribute to defray it, and thus save so large a draft on the class fund. The fund, at pres ent, amounts to a sum which falls far short of what we need. The object of the fund is to meet the expenses of class meetings, and of such reunions as we are this year to enjoy, and of printing Re ports, and all other incidental expenses. We thus escape the disa greeable necessity of continual assessments, and ensure a larger attend ance at all meetings. The plan has succeeded well in other classes, some of whom have funds large enough to pay all their expenses, of every description. I know there are many calls for money just at the present time. The Alumni Hall Fund demands our attention. A subscription paper for the class fund, however, will be offered to you, and I hope you will put money enough in your purse to pay all bills which may arise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fourth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1871 of Harvard College: June, 1880 In presenting my Fourth Report, I take the opportunity to thank all who have sent me answers to the circular issued, and to sav to those who have omitted to send answers, that they alone are to be blamed for any mistakes in their records. The various points of interest regarding the Class as a whole, I have collected and condensed at the end of the report, to which I have added a statement of the finances of the Class and the min utes of the several meetings. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Second Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1872 of Harvard College: June, 1875 The report was intended to include all those who were ever in the Class; but I have kept distinct those who left College before graduation, to prevent any confusion. With the exception of a few details, it is supposed to be dated June 1, 1875. The history of the Class as a Class for the past three years is brief. Such meetings as have been held are given in the last part of the report. The only other matter of great importance has been the presentation of the class-cradle. The fortunate youth was born Dec. 13, 1873, and immediately put in his claim, which was found to be uncontested; and accordingly measures were im mediately taken to honor him as the first descendant of the Class should be honored. He declined waiting for a cradle proper; so the next best thing was to give him an emblematic cradle, which consisted of a fruit or cake dish of silver in the shape of a cradle, and engraved on one end, so that no one should mistake it for a boan class-cradle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1869 of Harvard College: December 31, 1887-August 1, 1894 The record of the Class from Dec. 31, 1887, to Aug. 1, 1894, is contained in the following report, given, so far as possible, in the letters of the members themselves. Of the one hundred and eight graduates of the Class, sixteen living members are not married. Of the non-graduates, two only are recorded as not married. Of the one hundred and eight grad uate members, fifteen have died since graduation. Of the thirty seven men connected with the Class, not graduates, eight have died. Seven I have received no record of. Fabens, Hartwell, Royal Whitman Merrill, and Sargent have died since the last report. Memoirs of each, read at Commence ment, are printed in this report. Also the memoir of Howland, which was read at the Commencement meeting. June, 1888. It is a pleasure to record that two members of the Class who left in the latter part of our senior year of their own choice have this year received their a.r. From the University.
