Download or read book The Woman Patient written by Malkah Notman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents the knowledge, views, and experiences of ex perts in the fields of health care that are particularly important to women. Not all of the authors agree on all of the issues, but all share the same concerns about women's health and recognize the impor tance of providing information to enable women to become active par ticipants in the health care partnership. The idea for the book evolved from our own work in the field of women's health care. The positive responses we received to several papers and presentations based on our experiences and addressed to patients, physicians, and other health care professionals indicated that there is a growing need for open discussion of women's health care issues as well as a need for developing and implementing new and better ways of dealing with these issues. We were further motivated by the repeated failure of the health care community to integrate new insights and information (that frequently contradict older, established beliefs and practices) into current health planning, education, and practice.

Download or read book Radical Sisters written by Anne M. Valk and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radical Sisters offers a fresh exploration of the ways that 1960s political movements shaped local, grassroots feminism in Washington, D.C. Rejecting notions of a universal sisterhood, Anne M. Valk argues that activists periodically worked to bridge differences for the sake of alleviating women's plight, even while maintaining distinct political bases. While most historiography on the subject tends to portray the feminist movement as deeply divided over issues of race, Valk presents a more nuanced account, showing feminists of various backgrounds both coming together to promote a notion of "sisterhood" and being deeply divided along the lines of class, race, and sexuality.

Book excerpt: Honouring Social Justice brings together a diverse group of leading legal scholars, criminologists, and sociologists to study numerous contemporary social justice issues. In doing so, the contributors to this collection present a thorough and multifaceted portrait of recent successes and challenges of the criminal justice systems in Canada and elsewhere. Examining a broad range of vital contemporary social, judicial, and political issues, the essays in this volume pursue topics such as the targeting of marginalized groups, wrongful convictions, gender-based bias in law, government accountability, and inequalities in the application of the law to ethnic and socio-economic groups. These essays provide an illuminating introduction to the background of important social causes, and describe dedicated examples of how to effectively champion calls for social justice. Written to honour the life and work of the late Dianne Martin, a renowned scholar, lawyer, and social activist, Honouring Social Justice is an engaging and inspired series of accounts on how to improve society by leading experts from across the country.
