Book excerpt: In August 2010, a New Zealand soldier died in a roadside bomb blast in Afghanistan. In retaliation, the New Zealand SAS led a raid on two isolated villages in search of the fighters they suspected were responsible. They all knew the rules. Prior to firing weapons, their freshly issued orders said, `the commander approving the strike must determine that no civilians are present.¿ If they could not assess whether civilians were present, firing was prohibited. But it all went horribly wrong. None of the fighters were found but, by the end of the raid, 21 civilians were dead or wounded. Most were children or women, including a three-year-old girl who was killed. A dozen houses had been burnt or blown up. The operation was personally approved by the prime minister via phone from New Zealand. More missions against the group of fighters and more potential crimes of war followed, including the beating and torture of a prisoner. Afterwards no one took responsibility. The New Zealand military denied the facts and went to great lengths to cover things up. This book is the story of those events. It is, at heart, about the meaning of honour; about who we want to be and what we believe in as New Zealanders.

Book Defending New Zealand

Download or read book Defending New Zealand written by James Grant Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In six chapters James Rolfe analyses the defence policy system in detail. He describes the organisation of defence, discusses the evolution of the policy-setting parts of the organisation, and then concentrates on the processes used to make policy decisions and the factors which policy makers consider to be important. The book employs examples from a wide range of issues and events of the last 20 years and includes details on alliance relationships and how they are managed, troop deployments and the background to equipment decisions. This is the first study of New Zealand's defence policy system. It is completely up to date and the arugments in it are pertinent to current debates about the necessity for defence and defence capabilties." -- Back cover.

Book The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War II

Download or read book The New Zealand Expeditionary Force in World War II written by Wayne Stack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1939 more than 140,000 New Zealanders enlisted to fight overseas during World War II. Of these, 104,000 served in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Initially thrown into the doomed campaign to halt the German blitzkrieg on Greece and Crete (1941), the division was rebuilt under the leadership of MajGen Sir Bernard Freyberg, and became the elite corps within Montgomery's Eighth Army in the desert. After playing a vital role in the victory at El Alamein (1942) the 'Kiwis' were the vanguard of the pursuit to Tunisia. In 1943–45 the division was heavily engaged in the Italian mountains, especially at Cassino (1944); it ended the war in Trieste. Meanwhile, a smaller NZ force supported US forces against the Japanese in the Solomons and New Guinea (1942–44). Fully illustrated with specially commissioned colour plates, this is the story of the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force's vital contribution to Allied victory in World War II.
