Book Radionuclides in the Food Chain

Download or read book Radionuclides in the Food Chain written by John H. Harley and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium on Radionuclides in the Food Chain, sponsored by the Interna tional Life Sciences Institute in association with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, was intended to bring together policymakers and other representatives of the food industry with radiation experts involved in measuring and assessing radioactivity in foodstuffs. The symposium was made timely by the problems arising from the nuclear reactor accident at Chernobyl, in the USSR, which brought out the lack of international agreement on guidance for responding to such radionuclide contamination of food and foodstuffs. The presentations by the radiation experts covered the sources of radionu clides-natural radioactivity, fallout from nuclear weapons tests, routine releases from nuclear facilities, and various nuclear accidents. The speakers represented a broad distribution in both scientific disciplines and international geographic origin. They summarized the available data on measurements and indicated the current procedures for assessing radiation exposure. It was hoped that the food industry representatives would bring out the problems posed to industry and governments by the presence of radioactivity in food.

Book Assessment of the Scientific Information for the Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program

Download or read book Assessment of the Scientific Information for the Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2005-09-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) was set up by Congress in 1990 to compensate people who have been diagnosed with specified cancers and chronic diseases that could have resulted from exposure to nuclear-weapons tests at various U.S. test sites. Eligible claimants include civilian onsite participants, downwinders who lived in areas currently designated by RECA, and uranium workers and ore transporters who meet specified residence or exposure criteria. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), which oversees the screening, education, and referral services program for RECA populations, asked the National Academies to review its program and assess whether new scientific information could be used to improve its program and determine if additional populations or geographic areas should be covered under RECA. The report recommends Congress should establish a new science-based process using a method called "probability of causation/assigned share" (PC/AS) to determine eligibility for compensation. Because fallout may have been higher for people outside RECA-designated areas, the new PC/AS process should apply to all residents of the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, and overseas US territories who have been diagnosed with specific RECA-compensable diseases and who may have been exposed, even in utero, to radiation from U.S. nuclear-weapons testing fallout. However, because the risks of radiation-induced disease are generally low at the exposure levels of concern in RECA populations, in most cases it is unlikely that exposure to radioactive fallout was a substantial contributing cause of cancer.

Book Clinical Nuclear Medicine

Download or read book Clinical Nuclear Medicine written by K. E. Britton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-11 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear medicine is the bridge between a particular clinical problern and a relevant test using radionuclides. It began as a minor technical tool used in a few branches of medicine, notably endocrinology and nephrology. However, throughout the world it has now become established as a clinical discipline in its own right, with specific training programmes, special skills and a particular approach to patient management. Although the practising nuclear medicine physician must necessarily learn a great deal of basic science and technology, a sound medical training and a clinical approach to the subject remains of fundamental importance. It is for this reason that we have attempted in this book to approach the subject from a clinical standpoint, including where necessary relevant physiological material. There exist many excellent texts which cover the basic science and technology of nuclear medicine. We have, therefore, severely limited our coverage of these aspects of the subject to matters which we felt tobe essential, particularly those which have been less well covered in other texts- for example, the contents of Chapter 20 on Measurement by Royal and McNeill. Similarly, we have limited details of methodology to skeletal summaries of protocol (Appendix 1) and have included at the end of some chapters descriptions of particular techniques where we and the authors felt that it would be helpful.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large body of information about possible causes of cancer has been ac cumulated by both clinical experience in man and observations in animal experiments. There is general agreement that in most cases cancer is due to exogenous factors, albeit the genetic disposition may also play an impor tant part. Three main categories of exogenous risk factors have been iden tified, namely chemicals, radiation, and viruses. In principle, it should be possible to prevent cancer by eliminating such risk factors. However, in spite of the rapidly growing number of well established risk factors, many shortcomings in our understanding of the causes of human cancer and in the introduction of effective preventive measures are evident. In addition to obvious gaps in our scientific knowledge, inadequacies in personal life style, irresponsible handling of environmental contaminants, and in some areas also deficiencies in political decisions seriously hamper the elimina tion of risk factors for cancer. It was this background which prompted the Committee coordinating Cancer Research in the GroBforschungseinrichtungen in the Federal Re public of Germany to organize a conference on Strategies for the Elimina tion of Cancer Risks. The conference was held in Heidelberg in June 1986. In areas which appeared to be especially pertinent to public health, author itative speakers presented the state of the art and prepared the basis for the discussion. Both the presentations of the speakers and the summaries of the discussions are contained in this book.

Book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests

Download or read book Exposure of the American People to Iodine 131 from Nevada Nuclear Bomb Tests written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-05-17 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, after more than a decade of research, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) released a report which provided their assessment of radiation exposures that Americans may have received from radioactive iodine released from the atomic bomb tests conducted in Nevada during the 1950s and early 1960s. This book provides an evaluation of the soundness of the methodology used by the NCI study to estimate: Past radiation doses. Possible health consequences of exposure to iodine-131. Implications for clinical practice. Possible public health strategiesâ€"such as systematic screening for thyroid cancerâ€"to respond to the exposures. In addition, the book provides an evaluation of the NCI estimates of the number of thyroid cancers that might result from the nuclear testing program and provides guidance on approaches the U.S. government might use to communicate with the public about Iodine-131 exposures and health risks.
