At the time of the 250th Reunion, Robert Dodge assumed, as did all other Dodges, that all Dodges had sprung from William and/or Richard. Later, Robert found out that there was a line of Dodges from a Tristram Dodge of Block Island, Rhode Island, and that HE himself came from that line. He wrote the first Tristram Dodge Genealogy upon which Theron Royal Woodward based his updated Tristram Dodge Genealogy. Both the Honorable Augustus Dodge (from the Tristram line), and Gen. Grenville Dodge (from the Richard line) spoke at this reunion. This book is a REPORT, Full, Authentic, and Complete, of all the Addresses and Proceedings of The Memorable First Reunion of the Dodge Family in America. His proposal, embodied in the circular call of October zist, 1878, was, he is very happy to say, welcomed with great enthusiasm, and distributed by many thousands amongst the wide-spread and very numerous family in all parts of the Union, and British Provinces, eliciting cordial replies and immense correspondence. Immediately upon its issue, a local committee of nine prominent members of our family, resident in or near Salem, was chosen; who accepted their requested duty; namely: in ample season, to secure the requisite halls; to provide appropriate music and a very ample dinner upon the shore and to arrange for the numerous speakers on the occasion. At the start of the Ford Motor Company in 1903, the Dodge Brothers supplied nearly every car part needed by the up-and-coming auto giant. After fifteen years of operating a successful automotive supplier company, John and Horace Dodge again changed the face of the automotive market in 1914 by introducing their own car. The Dodge Brothers automobile carried on their names even after their untimely deaths in 1920, which led to its sale in 1925 to New York bankers and subsequent purchase in 1928 by Walter Chrysler. Hyde not only details the brothers’ lives and influence on automotive manufacturing and marketing trends in the early part of the twentieth century but also their civic contributions to Detroit, their hiring of African Americans and women, and their often anonymous charitable contributions to local organizations. Despite their achievements and their critical role in the early success of Henry Ford, John and Horace Dodge are usually overlooked in histories of the early automotive industry, but Hyde has put them front and center again to appropriately credit their lasting legacy.
