Book Report of the KMI APRACA FAO Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Marine Capture Fisheries in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Report of the KMI APRACA FAO Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Marine Capture Fisheries in Asia and the Pacific written by Uwe Tietze and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2000 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Workshop was hosted by the Korea Maritime Institute (KMI) and organized by the Fishery Industries Division of FAO in cooperation with the Asia Pacific Rural and Agricultural Credit Association (APRACA). The findings and recommendations of the Workshop suggest that many countries in Asia and the Pacific benefit from globalization and deregulation. These benefits include improved quality and better access of their fishery products to markets in other countries within and outside Asia and the Pacific, increased export earnings, exchange of technology, increased productivity and efficiency and better supply of fishery products for local populations through liberalization of imports of fishery products. The negative effects of globalization and deregulation identified in the Workshop included increased competition for the small-scale domestic fisheries sector mainly through import of low-priced fish products. Book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020

Download or read book The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2020 written by FAO and published by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2020 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture has a particular focus on sustainability. This reflects a number of specific considerations. First, 2020 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries (the Code). Second, several Sustainable Development Goal indicators mature in 2020. Third, FAO hosted the International Symposium on Fisheries Sustainability in late 2019, and fourth, 2020 sees the finalization of specific FAO guidelines on sustainable aquaculture growth, and on social sustainability along value chains. While Part 1 retains the format of previous editions, the structure of the rest of the publication has been revised. Part 2 opens with a special section marking the twenty fifth anniversary of the Code. It also focuses on issues coming to the fore, in particular, those related to Sustainable Development Goal 14 and its indicators for which FAO is the “custodian” agency. In addition, Part 2 covers various aspects of fisheries and aquaculture sustainability. The topics discussed range widely, from data and information systems to ocean pollution, product legality, user rights and climate change adaptation. Part 3 now forms the final part of the publication, covering projections and emerging issues such as new technologies and aquaculture biosecurity. It concludes by outlining steps towards a new vision for capture fisheries. The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience – policymakers, managers, scientists, stakeholders and indeed everyone interested in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Book Report of the Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Fisheries in the Caribbean Castries Saint Lucia 4 8 December 2000

Download or read book Report of the Regional Workshop on the Effects of Globalization and Deregulation on Fisheries in the Caribbean Castries Saint Lucia 4 8 December 2000 written by Tietze, U., (ed.) and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2001 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a record of the proceedings and recommendations of the workshop. It was attended by twenty-one participants from ten Caribbean countries, as well as FAO officers. Possible positive impacts of globalization identified at the workshop include: improved access to overseas markets; increase in intraregional trade; access to technological improvements; increased demand for fish products through further development of tourism; increase in the contribution of the fisheries sector to foreign currency earnings and to gross domestic product. Possible negative impacts were foreseen in terms of: higher prices of exportable fish products in domestic markets; increased pressure on fully or overexploited fish stocks; erosion of decision-making at various levels in the absence of adequate reforms in governance; difficulties on the part of small countries in meeting scales of production needed to compete in a global environment. The main outcome of the workshop is the formulation of a Caribbean Fisheries Agenda on Globalization (CFAG), which is aimed to aid Caribbean countries prepare for the challenges of globalization.

Book Measuring the Contribution of Small scale Aquaculture

Download or read book Measuring the Contribution of Small scale Aquaculture written by Melba G. Bondad-Reantaso and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2009 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAO Expert Workshop on Methods and Indicators for Evaluating the Contribution of Small-scale Aquaculture to Sustainable Rural Development held in Nha Trang, Viet Nam, from 24 to 28 November 2009, attempted to develop an indicator system to measure the contribution of SSA. The workshop used a number of processes and steps in the developing the indicator system, including: (i) understanding the subject of measurements; (ii) identifying an analytical framework and ratting criteria (iii) developing a list of SSA contributions; (iv) categorising the contributions; (v) devising and organising the indicators of contribution; and (vi) measuring the indicators. The major outcome was the development, through an iterative process, of an indicator system which can provide a good measure of the contribution of SSA based on agreed criteria (accuracy, measurability and efficiency) and the sustainable livelihood approach analytical framework which consists of five capital assets (human, financial, physical, social and natural) and can be used for various livelihoods options.
