Download or read book African Activists in a Decolonising World written by Ismay Milford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-28 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As wars of liberation in Africa and Asia shook the post-war world, a cohort of activists from East and Central Africa, specifically the region encompassing present-day Malawi, Zambia, Uganda and mainland Tanzania, asked what role they could play in the global anticolonial landscape. Through the perspective of these activists, Ismay Milford presents a social and intellectual history of decolonisation and anticolonialism in the 1950s and 1960s. Drawing on multi-archival research, she brings together their trajectories for the first time, reconstructing the anticolonial culture that underpinned their journeys to Delhi, Cairo, London, Accra and beyond. Forming committees and publishing pamphlets, these activists worked with pan-African and Afro-Asian solidarity projects, Cold War student internationals, spiritual internationalists and diverse pressure groups. Milford argues that a focus on their everyday labour and knowledge production highlights certain limits of transnational and international activism, opening up a critical – albeit less heroic – perspective on the global history of anticolonial work and thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The founding of the U.S. National Student Association (NSA) in September of 1947 was shaped by the immediate concerns and worldview of the "GI Bill Generation" of American Students, returning from a world at war to build a world at peace. The more than 90 living authors of this book, all of whom are of that generation, tell about NSA's formation and first five years. The book also provides a prologue reaching back into the 1930s and an epilogue going forward to the sixties and beyond.
Download or read book Global Faith Worldly Power written by John Corrigan and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing the grand American evangelical missionary venture to convert the world, this international group of leading scholars reveals how theological imperatives have intersected with worldly imaginaries from the nineteenth century to the present. Countering the stubborn notion that conservative Protestant groups have steadfastly maintained their distance from governmental and economic affairs, these experts show how believers' ambitious investments in missionizing and humanitarianism have connected with worldly matters of empire, the Cold War, foreign policy, and neoliberalism. They show, too, how evangelicals' international activism redefined the content and the boundaries of the movement itself. As evangelical voices from Africa, Asia, and Latin America became more vocal and assertive, U.S. evangelicals took on more pluralistic, multidirectional identities not only abroad but also back home. Applying this international perspective to the history of American evangelicalism radically changes how we understand the development and influence of evangelicalism, and of globalizing religion more broadly. In addition to a critical introduction and essays by editors John Corrigan, Melani McAlister, and Axel R. Schafer are essays by Lydia Boyd, Emily Conroy-Krutz, Christina Cecelia Davidson, Helen Jin Kim, David C. Kirkpatrick, Candace Lukasik, Sarah Miller-Davenport, Dana L. Robert, Tom Smith, Lauren F. Turek, and Gene Zubovich.

Download or read book Towards a People driven African Union written by Ibrahima Kane and published by African Minds. This book was released on 2007 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first independent, substantive and public assessment of the progress of the African Union. "Towards a People-Driven African Union: Current Obstacles and New Opportunities" analyses the preparations of African Union member-states, the AU Commission and civil society organizations for the twice-yearly AU summits. The main finding is that despite some welcome new opportunities for participation, the African Union's vision of "an Africa driven by its own citizens" remains largely unfulfilled. Detailed recommendations are offered to help deliver on this vision in future. Published by AFRODAD, AfriMAP and Oxfam, this report is endorsed by more than a dozen other organizations in Africa and elsewhere, and is based on interviews with more than 50 representatives of member-states, the AU Commission and civil society organizations in eleven African countries.
