Book The Pedagogy of Protest

Download or read book The Pedagogy of Protest written by Brendan Walsh and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first complete account of Patrick Pearse's educational work at St. Enda's and St. Ita's schools (Dublin). Extensive use of first-hand accounts reveals Pearse as a humane, energetic teacher and a forward-looking and innovative educational thinker. Between 1903 and 1916 Pearse developed a new concept of schooling as an agency of radical pedagogical and social reform, later echoed by school founders such as Bertrand Russell. This placed him firmly within the tradition of radical educational thought as articulated by Paulo Freire and Henry Giroux. The book examines the tension between Pearse's work and his increasingly public profile as an advocate of physical force separatism and, by employing previously unknown accounts, questions the perception that he influenced his students to become active supporters of militant separatism. The book describes the later history of St. Enda's, revealing the ambivalence of post-independence administrations, and shows how Pearse's work, which has long been neglected by historians, has had a direct influence on a later generation of school founders up to the present.

Book A Mirror to Kathleen s Face

Download or read book A Mirror to Kathleen s Face written by Donald Akenson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1975, Donald Akenson’s book was at the forefront of a radically new approach to the study of Irish educational history. Instead of investigating the evolution of the schools as an isolated process, he explores the complex interrelations of Irish education, institutions and society, treating the schools as cultural litmus paper. By presenting Ireland’s schools as a reflection of the society that produced them, Professor Akenson demonstrates that they are, in truth, "a mirror to the face of Kathleen ni Houlihan".

Book Church State and the Control of Schooling in Ireland 1900 1944

Download or read book Church State and the Control of Schooling in Ireland 1900 1944 written by B. Titley and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1983-09-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the final two decades of British rule in Ireland the Roman Catholic Church saw its pre-eminent role in the control of schooling threatened by the secularist and democratic reforms of the imperial administration. Consequently, the Catholic bishops increasingly viewed the success of the nationalist movement as the best guarantee of the continuation of the educational status quo. The nationalist alliance proved a key element in obstructing proposed reforms in the pre-independence period - a period characterized by church-state hostility. In this volume Dr Titley examines the institutional continuity of the Irish school system, focusing on the role of the church as educational power broker. He shows how, in the congenial atmosphere of the new Irish state, the secular and ecclesiastical authorities shared the same educational philosophy and view of the role of religion in the schools. He argues that the church jealously guarded its educational hegemony because of the important role played by the schools in producing candidates for the religious life and an unquestioning middle class. Dr Titley also suggests that the failure of the secularist ideology to make headway in education proves that the Irish revolution was, in reality, a conservative reaction which insulated the country from modernizing influences. This volume is an important contribution to educational theory and to the cultural history of modern Ireland.

Book Boy Republic

Download or read book Boy Republic written by Brendan Walsh and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2013-06-19 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrick Pearse, teacher, poet, and one of the executed leaders of the 1916 Rising has long been a central figure in Irish history. The book provides a radically new interpretation of Patrick Pearse’s work in education, and examines how his work as a teacher became a potent political device in pre-independent Ireland. The book provides a complete account of Pearse’s educational work at St. Enda’s school, Dublin where a number of insurgents such as William Pearse, Thomas McDonagh and Con Colbert taught. The author draws upon the recollections of past-pupils, employees, descendants of those who worked with Pearse, founders of schools inspired by his work - including the descendants of Thomas McSweeny and Louis Gavan Duffy – and a vast array or primary source material to provide a comprehensive account of life at St. Enda’s and the place of education within the ‘Irish-Ireland’ movement and the struggle for independence.
