Book The Indus Basin of Pakistan

Download or read book The Indus Basin of Pakistan written by Winston H. Yu and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, Indus basin of Pakistan: the impacts of climate risks on water and agriculture was undertaken at a pivotal time in the region. The weak summer monsoon in 2009 created drought conditions throughout the country. This followed an already tenuous situation for many rural households faced with high fuel and fertilizer costs and the impacts of rising global food prices. Then catastrophic monsoon flooding in 2010 affected over 20 million people, devastating their housing, infrastructure, and crops. Damages from this single flood event were estimated at US dollar 10 billion, half of which were losses in the agriculture sector. Notwithstanding the debate as to whether these observed extremes are evidence of climate change, an investigation is needed regarding the extent to which the country is resilient to these shocks. It is thus timely, if not critical, to focus on climate risks for water, agriculture, and food security in the Indus basin of Pakistan.

Book Connecting the Drops

Download or read book Connecting the Drops written by and published by Observer Reearch Foundation. This book was released on 2013 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report seeks to build mutual understanding between Indian and Pakistani decision-makers of the common water risks they confront in the Indus Basin. Drawn from the combined input of 25 leading Indian and Pakistani water experts, climate change specialists, economists, and former ambassadors, the report provides a menu of practical steps to bolster Indian and Pakistani capacities to measure, evaluate, and address increasing strains on their shared water resources. Policy recommendations and ideas for cross-border research initiatives focus on five key areas: agriculture and food security, energy and economic development, climate change and environmental pressures, glaciology, and institutions, governance, and diplomacy.

Book An assessment of crop water productivity in the Indus and Ganges River Basins current status and scope for improvement

Download or read book An assessment of crop water productivity in the Indus and Ganges River Basins current status and scope for improvement written by Cai, Xueliang and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2010 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indus and Ganges River Basin, being the most populous in the world, is under extreme pressure to sustain food security. Production resources including water are being exploited to various levels from underdevelopment to heavy overexploitation. This report provides a bird’s eye view of the basin and focuses on the nexus between agricultural production and water consumption, making it possible to pinpoint the areas with high/low water productivity and identify the factors behind this, which helps to promote informed decision making in light of environmental sustainability.

Book Public Choice and Rural Development

Download or read book Public Choice and Rural Development written by Clifford S. Russell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 224 pages. It is a valuable resource for students interested in environmental studies and development studies.

Book Integrated Environmental Management

Download or read book Integrated Environmental Management written by Yasumasa Itakura and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The change from a rural to an industrial economy affects many countries. Rapid growth and development causes significant changes in environmental management for countries beginning to confront serious degradation problems. In the Pacific Rim, rich in environmental and human resources, widespread pollution problems affect water and air quality, contaminating groundwater and soils and dramatically increasing human exposure to hazardous waste. Critical resources - such as rainforests - disappear at an alarming rate. The book features in-depth reviews of the Pacific Rim's increasing environmental problems. It examines every major issue including hazardous waste, solid waste, water and wastewater, air pollution, biodiversity, industrial waste and much more. The final chapters outline education and information-sharing strategies designed to change environmental policy, putting the focus on slowing growth and working towards sustainable development. Integrated Environmental Management provides an information-packed review of the regions' environmental problems, concentrating on problem solving, sustainable development, and education. Anyone faced with environmental problems related to population growth and rapid industrialization will find this book particularly enlightening.

Book Social Economic And Institutional Issues In Third World Irrigation Management

Download or read book Social Economic And Institutional Issues In Third World Irrigation Management written by R. K. Sampath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, number 15 in the Studies in Water Policy and Management Series and joins two other volumes (8 and 10) that collectively summarize a significant part of the post-World War II experience of Western experts and donors with the development and management of irrigation in Third World countries. The evolution of understanding of Third World irrigation issues has been toward a greater appreciation of the potential for augmenting traditional production and water allocation systems with improved institutional arrangements for achieving allocative efficiency and equity. The need for local inputs for planning, system operation, and system maintenance is now widely recognized, as is the need for providing proper motivation for system administrators. The authors of this volume offer improved conceptual frameworks and analytic techniques applied to specific country and regional problems in hopes of edifying future experts and donors.

Book Improving agricultural productivity for poverty alleviation through integrated service provision with public private sector partnerships Examples and issues

Download or read book Improving agricultural productivity for poverty alleviation through integrated service provision with public private sector partnerships Examples and issues written by Hussain, Intizar and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2004 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Enduring low agricultural productivity is one of the major causes of rural poverty in South Asia. Based on a review of recent empirical studies, this paper focuses on three key questions: (1) why is agricultural productivity low in the region?; (2) what are the key constraints and opportunities for enhancing agricultural productivity; and (3) what are the effective mechanisms to improve access to key productivity enhancing technologies, factors and services. Two major points raised in the paper are: (a) improved management of land and water is important for increasing productivity, but equally important is farmer access to non land and water-related inputs and services, which through their complementary relationships with water, increase the productivity and value of water. Even if most of the constraints related to land and water are removed through improved management, the resulting gains in productivity may not be sufficient-in the presence of constraints related to other factors and services-to have any significant impacts on poverty. Therefore, in order to generate any major increases in productivity, improved access for farmers to non land and water-related factors and services is also important; (b) access to these factors and services can be improved by providing them in an integrated manner with public-private sector partnerships. Based on examples of various models, initiatives and practices from Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, China, Sub-Saharan Africa and other countries, the study suggests a framework for integrated services provision in the agriculture sector, and raises key research issues and questions to be explored.
