Book Sustainable Pest Management in Date Palm Current Status and Emerging Challenges

Download or read book Sustainable Pest Management in Date Palm Current Status and Emerging Challenges written by Waqas Wakil and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Date palm, Phoenix dactylifera L. (Arecales: Arecaceae), is an important palm species cultivated in the arid regions of the world since pre-historic times and traditionally associated with the life and culture of the people in the Middle-East and North Africa which are the pre-dominant date palm growing regions worldwide. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN estimates that there are over 100 million date palms with an annual production of over 7.5 million tonnes A recent report on the arthropod fauna of date palm, enlists 112 species of insects and mites associated with date palm worldwide including 22 species attacking stored dates. Enhanced monoculture of date palm in several date palm growing countries coupled with climate change, unrestrained use of chemical insecticides and extensive international trade is likely to impact the pest complex and the related natural enemies in the date agro-ecosystems. In view of the importance of date palm as an emerging crop of the future and the need to develop and deploy ecologically sound and socially acceptable IPM techniques, this book aims to comprehensively address issues related to the biology and sustainable management of major insect and mite pests of date palm by assessing the current IPM strategies available, besides addressing emerging challenges and future research priorities. The issues pertaining to the role of semiochemicals in date palm IPM involving new strategies revolving around “attract and kill” and “push-pull” technologies, phytoplasmas and their insect vectors with implications for date palm, innovative methods for managing storage pests of dates and knowledge gaps in devicing sustainable strategies for the management of red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier) are also addressed

Book Biological Invasions in South Africa

Download or read book Biological Invasions in South Africa written by Brian W. van Wilgen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-10 with total page 972 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access volume presents a comprehensive account of all aspects of biological invasions in South Africa, where research has been conducted over more than three decades, and where bold initiatives have been implemented in attempts to control invasions and to reduce their ecological, economic and social effects. It covers a broad range of themes, including history, policy development and implementation, the status of invasions of animals and plants in terrestrial, marine and freshwater environments, the development of a robust ecological theory around biological invasions, the effectiveness of management interventions, and scenarios for the future. The South African situation stands out because of the remarkable diversity of the country, and the wide range of problems encountered in its varied ecosystems, which has resulted in a disproportionate investment into both research and management. The South African experience holds many lessons for other parts of the world, and this book should be of immense value to researchers, students, managers, and policy-makers who deal with biological invasions and ecosystem management and conservation in most other regions.

Book Entomology Ecology and Agriculture

Download or read book Entomology Ecology and Agriculture written by Paolo Palladino and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Entomology, Ecology and Agriculture examines the vastly expanded governmental funding of scientific research and technological development for the institutional and intellectual organisation of life sciences in the twentieth century. It studies the history of natural historical investigations of insects in light of growing institutional organisation of the agricultural sciences in the United States and Canada, exploring how this context has shaped the emergence of economic entomology and ecology - two quite different but related disciplines. This study is facilitated by following economic entomologists' and ecologists' changing ideas about different pest control strategies, chiefly 'chemical', 'biological', and 'integrated' control. The author then follows the efforts of one specific group of entomologists, at the University of California, over three generations from their advocacy of 'biological' controls in the 1930s and 1940s, through their shifting attention to the development of an 'integrated' strategy in the 1950s, to their final establishment of "integrated pest management" in the context of "big biology" during the 1970s. Ultimately, this book is about the lives of scientists in twentieth century science as they have been shaped both by the massive intellectual and institutional structures of science, and by their own will to create something new and more rewarding out of these structures.

Book Science and Society in Southern Africa

Download or read book Science and Society in Southern Africa written by Saul Dubow and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection, dealing with case studies drawn from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and Mauritius, examines the relationship between scientific claims and practices on the one hand and the exercise of colonial power on the other. It challenges conventional views that portray science as a detached mode of reasoning with the capacity to confer benefits in a more or less even-handed manner. That science has the potential to further the collective good is not fundamentally at issue, but science can also be seen as complicit in processes of colonial domination.
