Book Report of the fifth WHO stakeholders meeting on gambiense and rhodesiense human African trypanosomiasis elimination Geneva Switzerland 7 9 June 2023

Download or read book Report of the fifth WHO stakeholders meeting on gambiense and rhodesiense human African trypanosomiasis elimination Geneva Switzerland 7 9 June 2023 written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-05-03 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerted efforts by national programmes, supported by public–private partnerships, nongovernmental organizations, donors and academia under the auspices and coordination of the World Health Organization (WHO), have produced important achievements in the control of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT). As a consequence, the disease was targeted for elimination as a public health problem by 2020. The Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly endorsed this goal in resolution WHA66.12 on Neglected tropical diseases, adopted in 2013. National sleeping sickness control programmes (NSSCPs) are core to progressing in the control of the disease and in adapting to the different epidemiological situations. The involvement of different partners, as well as the support and trust of long-term donors, has been crucial for these achievements. More than 20 years of partnership among WHO, Sanofi and Bayer have enabled WHO to strengthen and sustain financial, technical and material support for the implementation of control activities in countries where HAT is endemic. The long-term support from the Government of Belgium, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and other research institutions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has also been essential. WHO convened the fifth stakeholders meeting on the elimination of HAT due to infection with Trypanosoma brucei gambiense (g-HAT) and Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (r-HAT) in Geneva, Switzerland, on 7–9 June 2023. The meeting was held again in person after the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and jointly for both forms of the disease. The previous meetings on g-HAT held in 2014, 2016 and 2018, as well as on r-HAT in 2015, 2017 and 2019, and jointly for g-HAT and r-HAT in 2021 (8) reinforced the partnership and commitment for HAT elimination and structured the mechanisms of collaboration within the WHO network for HAT elimination. The network includes NSSCPs, groups developing new tools, international and nongovernmental organizations involved in disease control, and donors. Fewer than 1000 cases of HAT annually have been reported over the past 5 years, which is a historic achievement. The area at risk has been substantially reduced. The elimination of HAT as a public health problem at the global level has been achieved. The new road map for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) 2021−2030 (“the road map”) with the target to interrupt the transmission of g-HAT requires the strengthened and sustained efforts of all stakeholders, national authorities and partners, under WHO coordination. It will take disproportionally high efforts and innovative strategies to find the last cases of g-HAT and neutralize its transmission. Given the limited resources and other competing public health priorities, this is a challenge that requires our joint commitment.

Download or read book Taking a Multisectoral One Health Approach A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 FAO-OIE-WHO (Tripartite) zoonoses guide, “Taking A Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries” (2018 TZG) is being jointly developed to provide member countries with practical guidance on OH approaches to build national mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, communication, and collaboration to address zoonotic disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface. The 2018 TZG updates and expands on the guidance in the one previous jointly-developed, zoonoses-specific guidance document: the 2008 Tripartite “Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level”, developed in WHO South-East Asia Region and Western Pacific Region. The 2018 TZG supports building by countries of the resilience and capacity to address emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, and Rift Valley fever, as well as food-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and to minimize their impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies. It additionally supports country efforts to implement WHO International Health Regulations (2005) and OIE international standards, to address gaps identified through external and internal health system evaluations, and to achieve targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 TZG provides relevant country ministries and agencies with lessons learned and good practices identified from country-level experiences in taking OH approaches for preparedness, prevention, detection and response to zoonotic disease threats, and provides guidance on multisectoral communication, coordination, and collaboration. It informs on regional and country-level OH activities and relevant unisectoral and multisectoral tools available for countries to use.

Book Digital Hampi Preserving Indian Cultural Heritage

Download or read book Digital Hampi Preserving Indian Cultural Heritage written by Anupama Mallik and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-31 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book represents the culmination of a hugely successful heritage preservation project initiated by the Government of India’s Department of Science and Technology. It presents extensive research on the digital preservation of the history, mythology, art, architecture and culture of the world heritage site Hampi in Karnataka, the seat of the Vijayanagara dynasty in medieval India. Further, the book introduces readers to a range of techniques developed by Indian technical research groups for digitally preserving both the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the region. These techniques are sufficiently generic to be applied in heritage preservation efforts for other historical sites around the world as well. Technological advances have made it possible to not only create digital archives of these heritage artifacts, but to also share these resources for people to view, explore, experience, and analyze. This book showcases how cutting-edge technology can be combined with cultural and historical research to digitize and preserve heritage. It is the consolidation of work conducted under the Indian Digital Heritage project, a unique initiative of the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. The project involved collaboration between researchers in the areas of Technology, Computer Science, Architecture and the Humanities for the digital documentation and interpretation of India’s tangible and intangible heritage. It highlights the art, architecture, and cultural legacy of the world heritage site of Hampi in Karnataka, the medieval capital of the 14th-16th century Vijayanagara dynasty. The contributors to this book are scientists and technology experts from prominent academic institutes in India such as the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology), NIIT, and NID (National Institute of Design) working in collaboration with some of India’s top architects, art historians, anthropologists, heritage groups and multi-disciplinary cultural institutions such as the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS). Their papers will introduce readers to cutting-edge technologies from research areas such as computer vision, 3D modeling and artificial intelligence as they are employed to preserve art and culture in the digital domain. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 details efforts and techniques for modeling and representing the tangible heritage of Hampi, such as the reconstruction of damaged structures, realistic walk-throughs, and haptic rendering. Part 2 includes chapters detailing the analysis and digital restoration of artifacts such as mural paintings, inscriptions and sculptures, as well as mobile-based visual search for artifacts. Part 3 includes chapters on conjectural re-constructions of the architectural life, social life and traditions of Hampi. Lastly, Part 4 addresses the knowledge-based archiving and exploration of cultural heritage.

Book Primary Prevention of Mental Neurological and Psychosocial Disorders

Download or read book Primary Prevention of Mental Neurological and Psychosocial Disorders written by World Health Organization and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes a number of simple and effective measures for the primary prevention of selected mental, neurological and psychosocial disorders. Addressed to policy-makers as well as mental health professionals, the book aims both to increase awareness of the potential of primary prevention and to encourage the use of specific interventions. With these goals in mind, the book restricts its recommendations to measures whose effectiveness has been firmly documented in the scientific and clinical literature. Four disorders are covered: mental retardation, epilepsy, suicide, and burnout of health care staff. These were selected for inclusion on the basis of their relative frequency as well as the strength of evidence that primary prevention is both feasible and effective. The book adopts a public health approach, arguing that the multifactorial etiology of most mental and neurological disorders requires broad-based strategies involving many different sectors. Recommended lines of action range from simple procedures for lowering body temperature in feverish children through strategies involving genetic counseling and screening during pregnancy to measures at the legislative level including enforced iodization of salt to prevent cretinism and gun control or domestic gas detoxification as proven methods of suicide prevention. The book has five chapters. The first outlines the principles of primary prevention as these apply to mental, neurological, and psychosocial disorders, and summarizes the evidence supporting the effectiveness and feasibility of strategies for primary prevention. Chapter two on mental retardation, provides a guide to measures for the primary prevention of iodine deficiency, Down syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome, and phenylketonuria. Each disorders is discussed according to a common format that includes information on the size of the problem, risk factors and causes, and measures available for primary prevention. The remaining chapters provide similarly detailed advice on measures for the primary prevention of epilepsy, suicide, and burnout of professional and family caregivers.
