Download or read book Report of the Workshop on Creating an Enabling Envrionment for Securing Sustainable Small scale Fisheries written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The project “Creating an enabling environment for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries” (GCP/GLO/965/SWE), funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), supports the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines). [Author] It does so by, inter alia, improving relevant legal frameworks applicable to small-scale fisheries and reducing marginalization of small-scale fisheries stakeholders in decision-making processes. [Author] The project works with a wide range of stakeholders, ranging from small-scale fishing communities and organizations, to governments, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and academia, in both marine and inland waters. [Author] The project, initiated in December 2018, was designed under the FAO Umbrella Programme for the Promotion and Application of the SSF Guidelines (PGM/MUL/2015-2020/SSF) – Enhancing the contribution of small-scale fisheries to food security and sustainable livelihoods. [Author] Activities under the project first started in Cabo Verde, Costa Rica, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Myanmar, Namibia, Oman, Philippines, Senegal and United Republic of Tanzania. [Author] In subsequent phases of the project, support was further extended upon ad hoc requests to other countries, such as Mozambique, and to a number of small-scale fisheries organizations, civil society orgranizations (CSOs) and NGOs. [Author] The project fosters synergies with the project implementing the SSF Guidelines for gender-equitable and climate resilient food systems and livelihoods’ supported through the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad). [Author] A workshop on this project with project countries and partners brought together people to share experiences and lessons learned from the project. [Author] The workshop, which took place in Rome, Italy, from 14 to 16 November 2023, hosted discussions on the additional followup support that is required to further facilitate the implementation of the SSF Guidelines at national, regional and global level, hence contributing to a more sustainable small-scale fisheries sector. This book was released on 2021-05-15 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This circular describes the fisheries accident management process. It contains guidelines for national agencies (competent authorities) involved in fisheries accident investigations. It provides competent authorities and their investigators with a structured approach to meeting their legislative requirements to record, investigate, analyse, and report on accidents in the fishing sector. These guidelines are based on international standards, models and lessons learned from various countries where similar accident management processes are in use. The draft guidelines were discussed and finalized at a Train - the - Trainer workshop on safety at sea for small-scale fishers in the Caribbean, which was attended by 30 professionals on safety at sea and fisheries from seven Caribbean countries and was held in Castries, Saint Lucia in January 2020. The fisheries accident management process outlined may also be useful for other regions, which have similar safety challenges and opportunities for safety improvements in fisheries. These guidelines are intended to apply to a wide range of undesired events, such as accidents involving minor and serious injuries, fatalities, vessel damage, incidents involving damaged equipment and near misses.

[Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-28 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In view of the importance of other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for biodiversity, and the need to improve individual countries’ capacity to report fisheries-related OECMs and understand how the fisheries sector contributes to current and future area-based biodiversity conservation objectives, FAO has been carrying out a series of activities to support countries to identify and implement OECMs. [Author] These activities include the organization of workshops and the development of practical guidance, as requested by FAO’s Committee on Fisheries (COFI). [Author] With the support of the Organización del Sector Pesquero y Acuícola del Istmo Centroamericano (Organization of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of the Central American Isthmus [OSPECA]), FAO organized the workshop on other effective area-based conservation measures in fisheries-related areas in Latin America and the Caribbean. [Author] The workshop was held on 27–28 March 2023 in the city of San José, Costa Rica. [Author] This workshop supported Member Countries of the Commission for Small-scale and Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture of Latin America and the Caribbean (COPPESAALC), as well as regional and national fisheries-related organizations in the Latin American and Caribbean regions to: (i) apply CBD criteria for the identification of OECMs; (ii) understand the challenges, opportunities and needs that arise in the identification of fisheries‑related OECMs; and (iii) synthesize lessons learned and obtain recommendations. [Author] To achieve these objectives, topics discussed included: concepts and criteria for the identification, evaluation and reporting of OECMs; examples of OECMs in the world; conservation strategies in Latin America and the potential contribution of OECMs to these; the framework for fisheries governance and area-based management in Latin America; Argentina’s progress in recognizing OECMs; and the presentation of four case studies carried out in Chile, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico. [Author] The workshop enabled extensive exchanges on the difficulties of interpreting the concepts and criteria for the identification, evaluation, and reporting of OECMs, as well as the key points, challenges, and difficulties in analysing and considering potential OECMs. [Author]

This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture highlights the vital role of fisheries and aquaculture in both food and nutrition security as well as economic expansion. The sector remains a major supplier of high-quality animal protein and supports the livelihoods and well-being of more than ten percent of the world's population. International trade in fish has reached new peaks as overall production has continued to rise. Yet, as the document underlines, an array of problems--ranging from the need for more effective governance to that of ensuring environmental sustainability--threatens to undermine the sector's valuable contribution to alleviating hunger and reducing poverty. Using the latest available statistics on fisheries and aquaculture, this edition presents a global analysis of the sector's status and trends.
