Book excerpt: One of the last Army expeditions in the region, this was an exploration of parts of New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado during the summer of 1859, northward out of Santa Fe along the Old Spanish Trail, to discover if there were a practical railroad or wagon route through the San Juan River country to the southern settlements of Utah Territory (in case of further armed conflicts like the "Utah War"), and on to the west coast. The report found the mountainous terrain impractical for a railroad, and the weather too severe for permanent settlement. The Civil War delayed publication.

S. Newberry, geologist of the San Juan exploration party, which went from Santa Fe, New Mexico, to the vicinity of the junction of Grand and Green Rivera, in Utah, and back to Santa Fe, in the summer of 1859, and which party was in my charge. This is the report to which I alluded in my report to yon of November 1, 1860, as setting forth whatever the route above mentioned afforded of interest to the public at large or to the man of science. I trust it may be found possible to publish it. The report is arranged in seven chapters, with a prefatory note, and is accompanied by the following sketches and drawings, viz: Eleven water-color sketches, showing characteristic scenery of the region in Northwestern New Mexico, South western Colorado, and Southeastern Utah. Also, eleven drawings (eight of fossils and three of scenery), all of winch are interesting and important in connection with the report.
