Book The Archaeology of Food and Warfare

Download or read book The Archaeology of Food and Warfare written by Amber M. VanDerwarker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The archaeologies of food and warfare have independently developed over the past several decades. This volume aims to provide concrete linkages between these research topics through the examination of case studies worldwide. Topics considered within the book include: the impacts of warfare on the daily food quest, warfare and nutritional health, ritual foodways and violence, the provisioning of warriors and armies, status-based changes in diet during times of war, logistical constraints on military campaigns, and violent competition over subsistence resources. The diversity of perspectives included in this volume may be a product of new ways of conceptualizing violence—not simply as an isolated component of a society, nor as an attribute of a particular societal type—but instead as a transformative process that is lived and irrevocably alters social, economic, and political organization and relationships. This book highlights this transformative process by presenting a cross-cultural perspective on the connection between war and food through the inclusion of case studies from several continents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age are widely considered to have been the major features of the Earth's climate over the past 1000 years. In this volume the issue of whether there really was a Medieval Warm Period, and if so, where and when, is addressed. The types of evidence examined include historical documents, tree rings, ice cores, glacial-geological records, borehole temperature, paleoecological data and records of solar receipts inferred from cosmogenic isotopes. Growth in the availability of several of these types of data in recent years, and technical advances in their derivation and use, warrant this state-of-the-art re-examination of Medieval Warm Period. The book will be of value to all those with an interest in the natural variability of the climate system, for example those concerned with anticipating and detecting anthropogenic climate change.

Book Report of the Exploring Expedition

Download or read book Report of the Exploring Expedition written by John N. Macomb and published by . This book was released on 1876 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the last Army expeditions in the region, this was an exploration of parts of New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado during the summer of 1859, northward out of Santa Fe along the Old Spanish Trail, to discover if there were a practical railroad or wagon route through the San Juan River country to the southern settlements of Utah Territory (in case of further armed conflicts like the "Utah War"), and on to the west coast. The report found the mountainous terrain impractical for a railroad, and the weather too severe for permanent settlement. The Civil War delayed publication.
