Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year Ending June 30, 1921 The question of seed certification was also given attention, and the ads vantages of producing certified seed rather than ordinary Stock were brought prominently to the attention of growers of seed potatoes. Potato Spraying Experiments. In one experiment to determine the effect of pressure on the protection afforded by Bordeaux mixture, Mr. Butler found that, when the pressure used was reduced from 180 pounds per square inch, to 90 pounds per square inch, the protection afforded was reduced one-half. The mixture applied under 180 pounds pressure was more thor oughly distributed over the plants than that applied under 90 pounds pres sure; and this probably accounts almost wholly for the better protection afforded, since the amount of copper applied per acre on doubling a given pressure is not increased by one-third. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Research in New Hampshire: Annual Report of the Director of the Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year Ending June 30, 1946 During the fiscal year ending June 30, 1945, the war clouds were finally riven by the capitulation of Japan. This country, as the second Of the last two Axis powers to succumb, signed her articles of surrender, September 2, 1945. This second World War, was the costliest and most destructive Of all time. Of this there can be no question. The cost Of the war was put at for the world in armament and military materials with an added for civilian property damage. These estimates based on surveys made and compiled by James H. Brady and the American University do not include the money spent and the damage done incident to hostilities in China, because none of the figures for that country were available. The dead in World War II, including both military and civilian, was placed at according to a compilation released by the Vati can in November; the same report placed the wounded at Several international agencies had contributed to this resume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of Agricultural Experiments 1926: A Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1926, Including a Financial Statement for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1926 The broadening out of research work into the field of agricultural economics has perhaps been the outstanding feature of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station's first year of additional help from the Purnell Fund. This appropriation, made available by act of Congress in 1925, has for the first time made it possible for the Station to investigate such problems as the economic balance between production and consumption of food stuffs grown in the State, the trends of production, the costs of growing various crops under New Hampshire conditions, and the important marketing problems which during recent years have been of more and more concern to people interested in the agricultural welfare of the State. As a ground work for investigation of this type it was considered advisable to concentrate during the past year on the completion of an economic survey which we believe has the distinction of being the first state-wide survey of its kind that has been made in this country. The study reached into every section of New Hampshire, securing records from practically every retail store as well as a large percent of the hotels and camps. The results have already been set forth in Station Bulletin No. 222, "Can New Hampshire Produce More of What She Eats?" The study has raised several interesting questions; for example, it was found that over 300,000 bushels of potatoes, nearly half of those marketed in the state, are shipped in during the competing season when local grown potatoes could be sold. Whether certain types of farms cannot efficiently produce this crop by the use of improved methods in competition with outside areas, is one of the questions which we are now pursuing. Another important problem raised by the study deals with the possibility of producing poultry and vegetables for the White Mountain hotel trade. With many crops it was surprising to find how nearly the demand is at present supplied by locally grown products. The importance of knowing the facts regarding these questions is obvious. It is only by patient research that a true picture of the situation as regards production and marketing is possible. During recent years it has been possible for the Station to carry on more of its investigations throughout the state as a whole. So much of the research work has been of necessity conducted at headquarters in Durham that many people have perhaps not realized the state-wide significance of the work; but there is now a noticeable increase in the amount of territory over which it spreads. The investigators conducting the economic survey went into most of even the small towns in the State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Progress of Agricultural Experiments, 1923: A Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1923, Including a Financial Statement for the Fiscal Year Ending June 30, 1923 NO data were taken on the number Of buds stripped from the trees by the grouse during the winter Of 1921 - 22 because the seriousness Of the Situation was not realized until too late. The ruffed grouse attacked the orchard again during the winter Of 1922 - 23. On March 1, 1923, an estimate was made as to the proportion Of buds missing in the orchard, and it was found that as an average for all the trees, per cent of all the buds on side branches had been removed and per cent Of all the buds on top branches. The budding was fairly uniform over the entire orchard. On the plots that received no fertilizer, which are farthest from the woods, counts indicate that 31 per cent of the buds on Side branches were missing and 53 per cent of the buds on top branches. This is practically the same as the average for the entire orchard. The budding problem has been so serious in New Hampshire during the past two seasons that a special project in relation to injury to orchard trees by ruffed grouse has been organized under the Hatch funds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for Year 1930 In a period of economic depression such as we have been going through for the past year the importance of research work becomes even more obvious. There must be a body of reliable information on which to base decisions; and without such information, we are more likely in times of stress than ever before to be washed away from our moo-rings. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Research in New Hamphire: Annual Report of Director of New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1934 With a considerable body of knowledge of agricultural problems behind us, each decade still develops new questions which press for solution. The past few years have been a time of trial for the farmers of the state. The economic situation seems to have national and international implications - a sort of universal wave length which reaches to the last farm. The increased cost of grains, for example, has raised questions as to the possibility of raising more of our own feed stuffs. The influx of many new part-time and subsistence operators has resulted in specialized questions as to effective procedure for this new clientele. Meanwhile, new processes, new trends in the world at large are constantly reshaping the demand for our farm products. It is most fortunate that we have been able to carry on economic investigations during the past ten years. These studies have helped greatly to throw light on the unwieldy questions of marketing and economic production. The increasing importance of engineering problems has also been evident, and the need for much more work in this field is clear. The various fields of knowledge are becoming so specialized that there is more need than ever for a cooperative attack on many problems. We are finding it more and more advisable to get the combined viewpoints of specialists in different fields, and an increasing number of our research projects are now being prosecuted on a cooperative basis between different departments. There are similar opportunities between the Experiment Stations of the different states in this region. The northeastern Station directors have been cooperating in an attempt to coordinate research and to combine forces where feasible; and regional conferences of various specialists are proving of more and more importance. We are happy to announce that during the past year our chemical technique has been perfected for the determination of plant nutrients in soils. It is now possible to learn more about state soil samples than ever before, and to give more definite recommendations as to fertilizer treatment and soil management. Requests for this service are already increasing rapidly and are threatening to swamp our available facilities. The soil fertility studies of the last few years are already indicating important, facts as to soil management, and we now expect, through the cooperation of the Bureau of Soils of the United States Department of Agriculture, to begin next spring the long needed reconnaissance soil survey of the state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Research in New Hampshire: Annual Report of the Director of the New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year 1931 In times such as these every public agency must feel more keenly than ever the duty to fulfill its public trust: to return to the general good a greater sum in ultimate values than it has taken out. Such return is often difficult to measure accurately, especially in the research field, where we must often grope and fail. But it is only through constant experimentation that agriculture has advanced to its present levels, and only by the same means can we continue to progress. If public research seems costly, one may well consider how much more expensive and frequently impossible is research on the part of the individual farmer. And if public research seems inconclusive at times, it must be remembered that the observations of lone and untrained men would be hopelessly so. Civilization is committed to the laboratory and to trained research; and the pathway ahead out of economic depression would only be the darker if they were withdrawn. The past year has seen several important projects to a stage where conclusions could be drawn; among them, our economic fruit farm studies, the survey of Grafton County dairy farms, Boston milk consumption study, contact-insecticide project, study of root growth of white pine, studies in human nutrition, land utilization study, spray residues project, head lettuce investigation, etc. The following pages will give some details as to the significant results of the year. In the meantime it has been possible to develop several important new studies. 'The dairy situation in New England is acute, and one of the pivotal questions is the relative cost of Grade A as compared with Grade B milk. We are conducting a study of the practices and factors affecting marketing costs and quality of product. Of equal importance to the dairy industry should be a series of efficiency studies in the Connecticut Valley, dealing with dairy farm organization and production practices. With the completion of these projects, as well as of the Grafton County survey, previously noted, the Experiment Station should be in a position to give new counsel that will be welcome to many dairymen throughout the state. Other new investigations deal with coccidiosis of chickens, which has proved one of the most menacing of poultry diseases during recent years; and further development of the land utilization question; a beginning of definite Record of Performance work for poultry breeders was also made. The staff suffered a real loss during the year in the death of Philip R. Lowry, assistant entomologist, who had been with us for ten years and who died suddenly April 29 while engaged in his laboratory work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Science in New Hampshire Agriculture: Annual Report of Director of New Hampshire Agricultural Experiment Station for the Year, 1936 Results of our bacteriological study indicate that bacteria are not the primary cause of ruptured egg yolk in New Hampshire ocks. In the etiological studies plate cultures were made from the organs, peritoneal uid and yolk material of twenty birds with typical ruptured egg-yolk condition. Plain agar, meat infusion agar and meat infusion blood agar were used for isolation purposes, and the cultures were incubated both aerobically and anaerobically at 37 C. Thirty strains of bac teria were isolated and classified into four different Species on the basis of their morphological, cultural and biochemical characteristics.
