Book Doctors in Denial

Download or read book Doctors in Denial written by Joel Lexchin, MD and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors in Denial examines the relationship between the Canadian medical profession and the pharmaceutical industry, and explains how doctors have become dependents of the drug companies instead of champions of patients' health. Big Pharma plays a role in every aspect of doctors' work. These giant, wealthy multinationals influence how medical students are trained and receive information, how research is done in hospitals and universities, what is published in leading medical journals, what drugs are approved, and what patients expect when they go into their doctors' offices. But almost all doctors deny the influence and control the drug companies exert. In this book Dr. Lexchin urges the medical profession to make the changes needed to give priority to protecting and promoting patients' health and benefitting society, rather than enabling Big Pharma to dominate health care while raking in billions in profits from citizens and governments.

Book North American Social Report

Download or read book North American Social Report written by Alex C. Michalos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers who intend to read this volume without reading the first, some in troductory remarks are in order about the scope of the work and the strategy used in all five volumes to measure the quality of life. In the frrst chapter of Volume I, I reviewed the relevant recent literature on social indicators and so cial reporting, and explained all the general difficulties involved in such work. It would be redundant to repeat that discussion here, but there are some fundamental points that are worth mentioning. Readers who fmd this account too brief should consult the longer discussion. The basic question that will be answered in this work is this: Is there a difference in the quality of life in Canada and the United States of America, and if so, in which country is it better? Alternatively, one could put the question thus: If one individual were randomly selected out of Canada and another out of the United States, would there be important qualitative differences, and if so, which one would probably be better om To simplify matters, I often use the terms Canadian' and 'American' as abbreviations for 'a randomly selected resident' of Canada or the United States, respec tively.

Book Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications

Download or read book Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunications written by Vanda Rideout and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2003 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: InContinentalizing Canadian TelecommunicationsVanda Rideout examines active political resistance to the radical, neo-liberal transformation of Canadian telecommunications that has been orchestrated by the federal government, big business, and their powerful lobbyists over the last two decades. Rideout focuses on the protection of the public interest, a crucial element neglected by most recent studies, and shows that although alliances have been formed between labour, consumers, and public interest activists, significant disagreements over issues such as free trade, long distance and local competition, and a targeted subsidy program for very low-income Canadians have meant that this united front has not been able to counter the forces of the new neo-liberal telecommunication policy regime.Continentalizing Canadian Telecommunicationsdetails the complex relationships between the various corporate and government interests, shows how the changes they brought about have locked Canada's telecommunications system into the orbit of the US system, and discusses the implications this has for Canadians.

Book The Drug Industry

Download or read book The Drug Industry written by Myron J. Gordon and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 1981-01-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this independent study, first published in 1981, economists Myron Gordon and David Fowler test the assertions made by both defenders and critics of multinational drug corporations. The pharamaceutical business in Canada is a classic example of a foreign-dominated manufacturing industry. Drug industry practices—such as the high cost of drug products, agressive marketing of drugs to doctors, inadequate testing of potentially dangerous substances, and excessive profits—have concerned both media and citizens in Canada. The Drug Industry is an analysis of a classic branch-plant business in Canada, offering recommendations for increased and closely-focussed government regulation.

Book Multinationals and Transfer Pricing

Download or read book Multinationals and Transfer Pricing written by Alan M. Rugman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the reasons for the success of multinational enterprises in their ability to create in their supranational organisations "internal markets" which eliminate the imperfections of external world markets caused by tariffs on trade, restrictions on the flow of capital, information costs and so on. The method multinationals use to create and sustain internal markets is transfer pricing. Multinationals use to their advantage the difference between nominal accounting and real transfers from their head offices to a subsidiary in different countries to overcome transaction costs and restrictions on trade and capital flows. This book, first published in 1985, examines these and other aspects of multinationals’ use of transfer pricing. It puts forward original thinking and research findings by leading experts in this area. Empirical results are related to the activities of multinationals in less developed countries. This volume covers the economic theories of transfer pricing, accounting and fiscal practices and implications for government policies and regulations, and will be of interest to students of economics and business studies.
