This book was released on 2017-12-16 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Committee on Markets, Prices and Costs of the New York State Food Investigating Commission: August 1, 1912 For a number of years past the increase in the cost of food products has attracted the attention of the civilized world. The British Government, the Canadian Government, and our own Federal Department at Washington have made from time to time investigations as to the rise in price levels of food products, both wholesale and retail, and have made comparisons in the relations which exist, and tend to exist, between prices of food stuffs and wages, salaries and incomes. The material so gathered is more or less fragmentary, covering principally the phase of price increase. The national government has made great strides in the last few years in the direction of improving standards of purity and correct labelling of food products through the Pure Food and Drugs Act, and has greatly improved the quality of meat food products through the Federal Meat Inspection Law, which has been in successful operation for more than a decade. In this State the sanitary conditions of milk and other food products have been closely followed up. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Virtual Competition

Download or read book Virtual Competition written by Ariel Ezrachi and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating book about how platform internet companies (Amazon, Facebook, and so on) are changing the norms of economic competition.” —Fast Company Shoppers with a bargain-hunting impulse and internet access can find a universe of products at their fingertips. But is there a dark side to internet commerce? This thought-provoking exposé invites us to explore how sophisticated algorithms and data-crunching are changing the nature of market competition, and not always for the better. Introducing into the policy lexicon terms such as algorithmic collusion, behavioral discrimination, and super-platforms, Ariel Ezrachi and Maurice E. Stucke explore the resulting impact on competition, our democratic ideals, our wallets, and our well-being. “We owe the authors our deep gratitude for anticipating and explaining the consequences of living in a world in which black boxes collude and leave no trails behind. They make it clear that in a world of big data and algorithmic pricing, consumers are outgunned and antitrust laws are outdated, especially in the United States.” —Science “A convincing argument that there can be a darker side to the growth of digital commerce. The replacement of the invisible hand of competition by the digitized hand of internet commerce can give rise to anticompetitive behavior that the competition authorities are ill equipped to deal with.” —Burton G. Malkiel, Wall Street Journal “A convincing case for the need to rethink competition law to cope with algorithmic capitalism’s potential for malfeasance.” —John Naughton, The Observer

Download or read book The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report written by Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Financial Crisis Inquiry Report, published by the U.S. Government and the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission in early 2011, is the official government report on the United States financial collapse and the review of major financial institutions that bankrupted and failed, or would have without help from the government. The commission and the report were implemented after Congress passed an act in 2009 to review and prevent fraudulent activity. The report details, among other things, the periods before, during, and after the crisis, what led up to it, and analyses of subprime mortgage lending, credit expansion and banking policies, the collapse of companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the federal bailouts of Lehman and AIG. It also discusses the aftermath of the fallout and our current state. This report should be of interest to anyone concerned about the financial situation in the U.S. and around the world.THE FINANCIAL CRISIS INQUIRY COMMISSION is an independent, bi-partisan, government-appointed panel of 10 people that was created to "examine the causes, domestic and global, of the current financial and economic crisis in the United States." It was established as part of the Fraud Enforcement and Recovery Act of 2009. The commission consisted of private citizens with expertise in economics and finance, banking, housing, market regulation, and consumer protection. They examined and reported on "the collapse of major financial institutions that failed or would have failed if not for exceptional assistance from the government."News Dissector DANNY SCHECHTER is a journalist, blogger and filmmaker. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Committee on Production of the New York State Food Investigating Commission: April 18, 1913 Members of the Committee on Production of the Food Investi gating Commission, as a result of a preliminary survey of the work to be undertaken by the entire Commission, became eon vineed that the work of the Committee on Markets, Prices and Costs was of paramount importance, and that such work as might be undertaken by the Committee on Production should be under taken only after ample facilities had been placed at the command of the Committee on Markets, Prices and Costs to enable it to make a thorough and exhaustive study of that field. The limited appropriation made by the Legislature for the work of the Food Investigating Commission, which was originally only and afterwards increased to made it impos sible to undertake, with the single exception of the work of the, Committee on Markets, Prices and Costs, original work of any moment into the questions surrounding the production of food products in this State.
