A, for the Years 1901-2: Colorado The first mining camp established in Colorado, inhabited by the white man, was within the present boundaries of Arapahoe county. While not strictly a mining county, and while gold mining receives but little attention, the same placer bars and placer gold exist at present as in 1858. Nearly all the stream beds in the western end of the county may yet be made to yield gold in small quantity, and each year the total gold production of the state includes a few thousand dollars' worth from this section. This book was released on 2017-10-31 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the State Bureau of Mines for the Years 1899-1900: Colorado History reveals the prospector in search of the precious metals at all times to be the advance agent of civilization. Following the indistinct trail of the trapper, he was rewarded by the discovery of gold in paying quantities in several local ities of Colorado in the years 1858-59. The reports of his dis coveries transmitted across the plains by word of mouth to the Eastern states, were heralded in exaggerated form and the tide of immigration was turned westward. Many who had lost their all in the financial panic of 1857, joined the van in the hope of retrieving their losses. Very few had any conception of the hardships undertaken beyond a long drive across the country, and possibility of Indian outrages. Equipped for these with fond hopes, brave hearts, and wagon covers emblazoned Pike's Peak or Bust, the journey was undertaken and the caravan put in motion. Some failed to reach their proposed destination, finding homes of promise in the Middle states, but the more determined arrived Only to realize that the golden pictures that had lured them from home had been too highly colored. With the realization that gold did not exist in quantities that would enable them to amass a fortune in a few days' or weeks' time, many reluct antly turned their faces eastward. The remainder were about equally divided, viz.: Those who were convinced of future possibilities and those who were financially unable to undertake the return journey, and compelled by circum stances to seek remuneration for labor in the placer beds. The areas bearing free gold being comparatively limited, and each crowded with men impatient to dig out fortunes, the interest excited by the realization of the heavy gains by a few subsided by degrees with the gradual decrease of earn ings. Emigration to other fields followed, leaving the fur ther development of the country to the few whose faith and pluck proved equal to the task.
