Book From the Pleistocene to the Holocene

Download or read book From the Pleistocene to the Holocene written by C. Britt Bousman and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Pleistocene era brought dramatic environmental changes to small bands of humans living in North America: changes that affected subsistence, mobility, demography, technology, and social relations. The transition they made from Paleoindian (Pleistocene) to Archaic (Early Holocene) societies represents the first major cultural shift that took place solely in the Americas. This event—which manifested in ways and at times much more varied than often supposed—set the stage for the unique developments of behavioral complexity that distinguish later Native American prehistoric societies. Using localized studies and broad regional syntheses, the contributors to this volume demonstrate the diversity of adaptations to the dynamic and changing environmental and cultural landscapes that occurred between the Pleistocene and early portion of the Holocene. The authors' research areas range from Northern Mexico to Alaska and across the continent to the American Northeast, synthesizing the copious available evidence from well-known and recent excavations. With its methodologically and geographically diverse approach, From the Pleistocene to the Holocene: Human Organization and Cultural Transformations in Prehistoric North America provides an overview of the present state of knowledge regarding this crucial transformative period in Native North America. It offers a large-scale synthesis of human adaptation, reflects the range of ideas and concepts in current archaeological theoretical approaches, and acts as a springboard for future explanations and models of prehistoric change.

Book Archaeological Investigation of the Elk Mountain Glassy Basalt Resource Area and Workshop Wallowa County Oregon

Download or read book Archaeological Investigation of the Elk Mountain Glassy Basalt Resource Area and Workshop Wallowa County Oregon written by Robert A. Nisbet and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elk Mountain administrative site was investigated in 1979 and 1980 as a result of being declared excess property. A cultural resource reconnaissance of the property revealed a glassy basalt resource area on and adjacent to the administrative site, as well as a substantial stone tool workshop to the east. The archaeological site was found to be eligible to the National Register of Historic Places and a mitigation plan was developed which called for data collection prior to transfer of title from the federal government. This report covers that data collection process. It was found that the administrative site had been partially disturbed by historic and neoteric use, and contained only a sparse scatter of lithic material. The adjacent workshop area was found to contain dense quantities of chipping waste and numerous small biface fragments. The site appears to have functioned as a primary reduction area for the production of small biface blanks for the last two to three thousand years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few questions more central to understanding the prehistory of our species than those regarding the institutionalization of social inequality. Social inequality is manifested in unequal access to goods, information, decision-making, and power. This structure is essential to higher orders of social organization and basic to the operation of more complex societies. An understanding of the transformation from relatively egalitarian societies to a hierarchical organization and socioeconomic stratification is fundamental to our knowledge about the human condition. In a follow-up to their 1995 book Foundations of Social Inequality, the Editors of this volume have compiled a new and comprehensive group of studies concerning these central questions. When and where does hierarchy appear in human society, and how does it operate? With numerous case studies from the Old and New World, spanning foraging societies to agricultural groups, and complex states, Pathways to Power provides key historical insights into current social and cultural questions.
