Book excerpt: The Committee was set up, under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986, to provide the Home Secretary with independent advice about the use of animals in scientific procedures. The Committee is required to give advice about the working of the Act and must take account of the legitimate requirements of science and industry and the protection of animals against avoidable suffering. During 2002, activities included giving advice on particular applications for project licences, advising on the suitability of overseas sources of primates, and reviewing the legislation relating to permissible means of euthanasia. This period also saw the report of the Lords Select Committee on Animal Experimentation, and examination of Home Office responses to allegations made by animal protection organisations. Annexes include the Committees code of conduct and a register of members' interests.
