Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Alaska Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1920 The condemnation of the dairy herds around Fairbanks on account of tuberculosis caused a pressing need for milk, particularly for infants. As it is very expensive and would require several years to build up a dairy herd, the Fairbanks Station assisted in the intro duction of heavy milking strains of goats by procuring a purebred Toggenburg buck and a doe from Woodinville, Wash, and a three quarter blood Toggenburg doe of exceptionally good milking quality. Goats have certain advantages for the small farmer or town house holder. In the summer they can live to a large extent by browsing on all kinds of green vegetation, and-four goats can live on the feed that is required by one cow. Their milk is particularly good for children. Furthermore, the 00st of the animals and the charges paid to freight them into Alaska are much less than for cattle. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Alaska Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1917 From an agricultural standpoint, 1917 was the worst season since these investigations have been in progress, the general average of results being, therefore, also the least satisfactory. The summer of 1915 was a favorable season from the standpoint of agriculture. By comparing the daily mean temperature at four of the stations for June, July, and August of that year with the temperatures of the same period for 1917, we find the cause of the difference in results. The facts are as follows. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Alaska Agricultural Experiment Stations, 1915 In the coast region the rainfall was also less than usual during the first half of the summer. This was favorable to all kinds of fruits and vegetables. At the Sitka Station the strawberries began to mature by the middle of June, the earliest date on record. The KO diak Station was affected unfavorably by this weather. The grass did not grow with its normal vigor, and grain crops seeded for hay were stunted for lack of rain. Nevertheless, there was sufficient pas ture to keep the cattle in fine condition. When it did begin to rain it rained so continuously that it interfered seriously with hay making, and barely enough hay and silage was saved to carry the herd through the winter. The farmers and gardeners throughout the whole Territory report a favorable season. Vegetables and berries were never better or produced in greater abundance. To point out the striking difference between the seasons of 1914 and 1915, there is given below a condensed temperature record taken from 18 stations, which represent the whole Territory.
