Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey, for the Year 1867 On the resignation of Brevet Major General Robert F. Stock ton, I was commissioned by you to this office, April 12, 1867, and entered upon its duties the same date. From that time until the present I have given it my undivided personal attention and efforts. Assisted, as I have been, by an efficient clerical force, I cannot fail now to applaud them for their conscientious discharge of duty, for the accuracy and promptness with which they have followed my directions. The routine office business has been despatched with great celerity. During the past year several thousand letters have been received, the desired information collected and proper endorse ments made. Many statements have also been compiled, for the several bureaus of the Department. The office of pensions has demanded of us almost daily, complete records of the military history of each applicant from this State. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant-General of the State of New Jersey for the Year Ending 1861 The board appointed for the purpose in the year 1859, reported an act, which was passed by the Legislature, and approved the following year, which, while it improved the existing law in a great degree, did not remedy all its defects, nor was it entirely satisfactory to the board Of revisers. The country being at the time in profound peace, it was deemed better to obtain such provisions as seemed to be absolutely necessary rather than hazard the loss of all improvement by the introduction of a thorough revision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey, for the Year Ending October 31st, 1874 The United States Government have adopted a revised system of infantry tactics, with tactics assimilated thereto for cavalry and artillery. This new system, now in use in the Regular Army, has been ordered for the instruction of the National Guard of our State, and the different organizations have been furnished with copies of the work. It would be of great benefit to the service if some proper place could be procured and held by the State as a range to perfect the men in the use of the breach-loading rifle soon to be furnished by the United States. Although the drill of the soldier by company and battalion is indispensable, it is also very important that he should attain a proper proficiency in firing the weapon which he is required to handle. I respectfully call your urgent attention to the need the troops have for some ground for target practice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey: For the Year Ending October 30th, 1880 Records of the Ofice. - For several years I have felt it my duty to call the attention of the Executive of the State to the insecurity of the valuable records of this department. I confidently expect serious consequences from the very inflammable contents of this room, and desire especially to decline any responsibility, if, at any time, the records of the military history of our State should be destroyed by fire. I have given years of labor to the proper compilation of these records; I am proud of their present completeness and reliability, and I speak with much feeling when I regret that this work for the State is left for one hour in its present dangerous condition. Guard. - The National Guard of this State is composed of forty-nine (49) companies of infantry, one (1) battery of artillery, and two (2) gatling gun companies. This 18 an increase of two com panics of infantry during the year. The force now consists of two hundred and sixty (260) officers and thirty-one hundred and forty nine (3149) men, an increase, during the year, of twenty (20) officers and one hundred and sixty-two (162) men. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Adjutant General of the State of New Jersey: For the Year Ending October 31st, 1873 State of New Jersey, Adjutant General's Office, Trenton, October 31, 1873. To His Excellency. Joel Parker. Governor and Commander in Chief: Sir: - I have the honor to submit the following report of this department for the year 1873: The daily routine business of this office remains the same as in previous years, with however an increased demand for searches for the records of soldiers of the volunteer army. Our time has during the year been principally devoted to revising and correcting the manuscripts and proof-sheets of the "Official Register of the Officers and Men of New Jersey in the War of the Rebellion." This work is passing through the press as rapidly as the most careful examination and verification of each date and record will admit. We are laboring to make this volume the most complete and exact register of soldiers every published. The style and execution of the work thus far cannot fail to be commended. In addition to the roster of New Jersey organizations we hope to show a record of all credited to this State who served in the United States Regular Army and Navy. Marine Corps, Veteran Reserve Corps and Colored Troops. If this is done the record of no State will be as complete as our own. We have been fortunate in obtaining some valuable documents relating to Jerseymen who participated actively in the French War. These documents give the various positions held and the terms of service of about two thousand soldiers. The papers are still in a rough state, but will be properly arranged by companies and battalions so that the war record of this State may be carried back even to this early period. The National Guard of this State now consists of sixty-nine (69) companies of Infantry, two (2) companies of Cavalry, and two (2) companies of Artillery. The force is complete as allowed by law, except one company of Colored Infantry as yet unorganized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. McClellan, Governor and Commander-in-Chief: Sir: - I have the honor to submit the following report of this Department for the year 1878: Office Business. - The current business of the office has been transacted as rapidly as the nature of the searches required would admit. Certificates of record are constantly required by those who wish to prove military service. The records of the office are very complete of all New Jersey soldiers for the last one hundred and twenty years, and it is certainly unwise for the State to hazard these invaluable documents to destruction by fire. The compilation has been well received by those interested in the record of the late war, and it is hoped will be preserved in families as a memorial of the service of the volunteers of this State. Pensions. - At the last session of the Legislature, a supplement was passed to the "Act for the relief of the soldiers and sailors of this State in the war of eighteen hundred and twelve," providing that the widows of soldiers and sailors, who were married to them prior to January 1st, 1825, who have not again married, and who are not entitled to a pension under any law of the United States, shall still receive the sum of one hundred dollars per annum, in equal semi-annual payments, during their lifetime. On March 9, 1878, the Congress of the United States passed an act granting a pension of like character to soldiers and sailors, and the widows of soldiers and sailors in that war.
